Middle position for 3 pickup custom?
« on: November 03, 2013, 11:15:05 PM »
In the market for another 70's Greco LP copy and have my eye on a 3 pup custom.
Loved the stock pickups in my current Greco but ended up dropping some Black Dogs in them for an experiment and they have not left!

But this guitar is going to be used more for a proggy post-rock meets prog-metal project so I'm pretty sure the stock pups will have to go (obviously this is all hypothetical until I actually get it and see how it works with my setup).

My question is, if I do eventually replace them it'll definitely be with BKPs, but as far as I can tell most HBs that would suit me come in pairs, and nothing seems to be available in a 3 pup set.

So what would the best pickup combo be for that style of music and should I grab a pair and a 3rd pickup, or a pair and a different pup, or get BKP to make a matched set of 3?

I was thinking something like a Nailbomb Ceramic set and maybe a Rebel Yell Bridge in the middle position just for a different flavour but I'm not sure if that will pan out with volume drops and stuff

The idea I always like to float by people who go for a 3 PU guitar is to consider a HS P90 middle PU. Fat like HB still, but with the full frequency response of a SC. Distincly nice midrange roar and amazing definition. Combines in cool ways with the HBs too. It then kinda is like a supercharged take on a HSH guitar. For prog projects I can very much see that added versatility and the P90 sound working. Add some nice wiring options and you got yourself something special that can do a heck of a lot of things.

Going with a C-bomb set my choice would probably be a MQ, giving a bit of a vintage variety kick in between, but being able to (I think) keep up in output and all. Similar idea as the RY is. You could also do a Stockholm or Supermassive (rather the later, but that would have to be a custom, which they normally do though).

Now I know this is not for everyone and most people like to dismiss P90s of the bat, but I recommend you at least look into it.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Not a bad idea I love P90s and never would have thought of this.

Might actually work very well as a P90 in the middle would have an interesting tone and also be a bit cleaner for clean passages.
Will look into that idea thanks man
