NGD - TABBY LEARNS TO SURF
« on: November 08, 2013, 04:47:46 PM »
Just completed a tele style guitar - calling it our Tabby Special model
Featuring an alder body - with strat style contours
the neck is a 3 piece quarter sawn maple neck with a maple fingerboard
25.5" scale length with Dunlop 6000 frets
Inlays are Paua abalone and we finished the body  finished in a colour to compliment the inlays
The headstock leans back giving a decent break angle over the Earvana nut

Sperzel tuners and a wilkinson designed Gotoh bridge with twistable saddles take care of the string anhoring
Electronics wise we have a Bare Knuckle Boss at the bridge position and a TV Jones Magnatron  unit at the neck position.
We had some special tele control plates made with a Gibson toggle switch in place of the blade switch

Sonically it's a nice mix
The Boss is a good tough sounding tele pickup and rocks out well
However I have discovered that the Boss is a great unit for rockabilly and surf styles.
The TV Jones is a bit like a tele neck pickup on steroids , yet has an acoustic guitar like sound to it.
Once again the rockabilly and surf sounds are fab with this unit.
the guitar was made however so that I could easily swap the neck pickup and pickguard to take either a single coil tele pickup or (as may well happen) putting a Mississippi Queen in there.

The guitar is a bit of a good all- rounder and is forcing me out of my usual dual humbucker comfort zone

Oh I really like that a lot, everything about it in fact. I've always wondered what a meaty Tele bridge pickup paired with a TV Jones neck would sound like.

Don't suppose you plan on making those Tele pickup plates with the Gibson toggle hole available to regular punters do you? I'm, err, asking for a friend.

ah, when you mentioned it earlier I didn't realize it was for you. Love it, think I'd prefer a 6saddle bridge but that's me  8)

I am not even gonna bother praising the guitar as I have said it all before mutliple times and could just about copy and paste it for everything you build.

What I am gonna say though is that I love the photography, great improvement there. You make it look so freaking tasty....and I the worst part is that I still am sure that they look even better in person.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n

Hmm not keen on the green blobs on the knobs.

However loving the 12th fret eyes and the toggle switch  :D

Angled headstock, surely that's heresy though?....  :P
The older I get, the better I used to be....

Super cool looking axe. The color scheme is really great. The only thing I would change if I could is the headstock. For this type of guitar I prefer a less sharp and pointy one, but that might be caused by my general dislike of pointy headstocks.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

It's a stunning looking guitar.  The finish, the scratchplate, the clever control plate, it's all good.  I'm sure it sounds every bit as good as it looks too
