My friend Will wants a new amp (for good reason - he's been playing thru some Marshall tranny bass combo from the 70s/80s).
I've suggested the Matamp MiniMat to him - and he's loving that idea. The thing is though - we're on a £300 budget and the matamp is £260 - so unless anyone has a cab they can sell for £40 he's gonna have to build his own 1x12.
I remember ages ago somebody on here built their own cab (was it you, davey?) - how much did it cost? how much could it be cut down to? what is needed and how do you do it?
In my head its just some plywood, some glue, a celestion V-30 and an input jack... however i suspect i'm very wrong and just being ignorant as usual,

the hardest thing you're gonna run into is doing the dovetailing for the corner joints. other than that, there isn't much to it.

Until he can afford it, attach the speaker to a cardboard box with a hole cut out for the speaker :lol: You never know... it might work, for 5 minutes..

I got him to try an LC15 in the shop, and he didn't like it AT ALL. Its a bit(VERY) weak at in-store volumes - i'm not sure how to show him how it'll sound at higher volumes.
Also, the LC15 isnt hand-wired, custom voiced, and with a built in attenuator... There's many advantages for going minimat over LC15 - also the LC15 would probably be too loud.

Those plans look cool for a basis to made it around - I think i'll start looking for something more like a step-by-step guide though...we're no carpenters! (well - actually our drummer's dad is...maybe he could help!)

yeah, any simple cab plans or alike would be greatfully accepted :). Do you think a Celestion Vintage 30 will do the job? what do i need to wire the speaker to? just a jack?

I may be wrong in this assumption but if you already have a combo with a 1x12 then why not use that ?

Even my Marshall AVT 50 soeaker has a jack so you can unplug it from the amp and run it into a cab.

Personally I would suggest that if the Minimat gives you the sound that you want then go for it you can always buy a cab later.

In the meantime, I'm sure you can borrow a cab, or make use of an older combo until the budget fits.

Buying something you don't 'really' want because of budget constraints always costs you more in the end, and it's a hassle.

Oh well, it was worth thought. It'll be interesting to see what he thinks of the Minimat ( you got me interested now you rascal) and maybe Rob's idea will be a goer.

actually, I'm feeling really charitable - snap my hands off before I change my mind... I have a 2x12 PA column here that I occasionally use for jam sessions, it's not an essential piece of my kit so I'd let it go for £40.

There is one 50w, 8ohm Goodmans Power Range speaker in there but with it being a 2x12 he could add another at a later date (or buy the other one off me later).
