NAD!
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:47:48 PM »

been looking at 5150s for a while now. still getting used to it since i'm so used to the mesa. but i can tell already that its definitely better for metal than the mesa (without pedals anyway)

and it sounds immense with this BKP stockholm i'm using right now

anyone here ever use a 5150 and have any tips?

Thats a proper old one!

My tips would be, don't use too much gain.
and
If you don't know when it was last serviced, it might be worth having it serviced.

yeah i usually keep the gain low. i'm in the "high gain" input but the gain is set at 3. and it sounds quite good and i definitely agree on getting it serviced. any idea how much servicing an amp usually costs?

yeah haha. no kidding. as much as i love my mesa, i realized it was always going to sound like a mesa. so its nice to have something that can do stuff a bit differently.

I agree and even though I had one years ago and then sold it because I fell out of love, the next time I had a go on one I realised how many records the sound reminds me of and I missed having one. definitely an amp that has a vibe of its own.

Congrats!

I like the attitude that you'll have something else as a variety. My old Recto is great, but it sounds like it does for good and for bad. So I could easily go the same route as you have.

It would be great to hear some opinions after you have played it some more.

I'll definitely give more of my opinion when I've played it some more.  It's definitely VERY sensitive to changes in eq

Oh you've now got tha br00talz!!  ha ha

You'll find tips around the place for tubes to use.

Quite a few people have these 'bias modded' to allow the bias to be turned up a bit.  Be conservative though if you get this done and use a bit of that extra range but don't wind it all the way as you could end up chewing through tubes like there's no tomorrow.

Standard tricks people use with these:

Tubescreamer with level dimed and gain on zero (I find this helps a lot)
ISP Decimator (you already have this!)
MXR 10-band EQ in the loop before the Decimator
A lot of people like an MXR Carbon Copy for a delay in the loop (last thing before the return).

This would be GUITAR -> SCREAMER -> AMP (THEN IN LOOP YOU HAVE EQ -> ISP -> DELAY)

Of course you can add other things if pedals are fun for you but my advice is avoid distortion pedals, they are really useless with these amps.  If you want an extra boost on top of the screamer add a boost pedal in front on the screamer.

The only problem you are going to have with this amp is cleans.  I have never heard of anyone getting a good clean out of one so don't bother.  Hopefully your Mesa can do that for you

my mesa has great clean tones. i'll definitely give that tubescreamer idea a whirl and see what happens.

Yeah the 10-band and Carbon Copy are definitely in the 'popular optional extras' category whereas the screamer and ISP are in the 'must haves' category.  I still haven't worked out my settings for the EQ and delay yet.  I'm not as big a fan of delays and reverbs as most people seem to be.  I put them in the category of neck pickups, as something to be used very sparingly
