new pickup for PRS Tremonti
« on: November 27, 2013, 03:48:48 PM »
So, I'm looking to replace my PRS Tremonti bridge pickup. I have a nailbomb in my other PRS singlecut and I love it, but i would like a different flavor.

I play two different styles of music: hard rock like Red,  breaking Benjamin, alter bridge...but i also play every weekend at my church on the praise and worship team. We play a lot of hillsong, Jesus culture, Chris Tomlin and bethel type stuff. So i need something a little versatile.

My problem with the Tremonti is it can be a tad bassy and a little scooped sounding. I will be sticking with the Tremonti neck. I really love that pickup so i want to keep it.

I have no idea where to go with this. I was kinda looking at vintage hot stuff like the abraxas but I'm totally open to suggestions. Thanks!

I think  'Rebel Yell'  is no so vintage but more versatile .

I'm surprised you find it bassy as when I tried the Tremonti, I found it to be about the same as my Custom 24, which is warm but quite balanced overall; perhaps a little down on the treble. The Abraxas could be a good choice as it's very versatile but compared to a Nailbomb it will be nothing like as tight with a much softer bass response. The Rebel Yell would be the next step down from the Nailbomb and is apparently a versatile pickup but has more upper mids and can therefore come across as rather aggressive. Thinking of your church playing, this may be a bit too much and the softer and smoother response of the Abraxas would sit better in that environment. In fact, I think a better compromise might be the Holydiver. It's tighter and more aggressive than the Abraxas but nothing like as extreme as the Nailbomb and Rebel Yell. It has the smoothness and the extra mids of the Abraxas but enough tightness and aggression to become an extremely versatile pickup. For me, the Holydiver gives you a better balance between the two styles you're after, though I'm sure you'd also like the Abraxas. If I had to pick a third option for you, I'd be inclined to suggest the Black Dog.

rebel yell seems like a safe bet for less bass and more mids
the holy diver should great too, but it's not a "vintage hot" model

my bandmate replaced the tremonti in his prs mccarty with a cold sweat, then with a miracle man
the miracle man is on the bassy side, but sounds amazing in it
the cold sweat was a little more balanced, though
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

The Cold Sweat would also be a good option.
