NPD: MXR Custom Badass Modified O.D.

O.K., this arrived on Thursday but today was the first day I got to crank my amp a bit and test it out.

It has booted the Maxon OD-9 off my board.

Reasons:

1. It can do everything the OD-9 can do with the bump switch engaged, and sounds like an OD-808 with it off
2. It doesn't have that annoying footswitch that the Maxon has, so I know when the pedal is on or off (I can feel it click)
3. The 100Hz knob
 
Here's a photo of it on my board (it's the one that ironically is switched off, but you can see the bump light is on).



Actually I prefer it with the bump off, at least when playing my Stockholm-loaded SG Junior through it.

I hope I don't pull these ugly guitar faces when I play with it, LOL

Not an MXR fan are you!  I think there are more MXR pedals on that board than I've seen in a long time  :D

Great O.D, i've got one myself and thus far it's been great, i love the 100hz when playing my 8 or 7 string, can bump off some more low end but i can have it back when switching to 6 strings, really versatile.


i use the bump but TBH i haven't looked at my settings much lately.

Not an MXR fan are you!  I think there are more MXR pedals on that board than I've seen in a long time  :D

I haven't had problems with them yet, and they fit together nicely on my board. The only nuisance sometimes is the proximity of the 9V plug to the input jack.

I even have the rubber boots on most of my MXR knobs (besides the chorus), which enables me to adjust them with my feet.  The only one I really don't like much is the Custom Comp, not because it is not a good compressor (it is a great one) but just because I don't have much use for it. I don't play a lot of clean passages.  I also haven't spent much time learning how to use some of the pedals, such as the delay and chorus.  I do use the EVH pedals now and then, especially the phaser.  The main ones I use are the overdrive, the boost, the phaser, the EQ, and the wah.   The non-MXR pedals - the Polytune and the Decimator - are actually the ones I use the most, the ISP is on all the time and having a Gibson I tune up regularly  :roll:

The schematic i saw looked like a glorified SD1, whereas i think the GR is TS-based? Not that an SD1 or TS are miles apart anyway, of course :lol:

Soldering small components is a pain in the arse.  Personally I'd rather just buy a pedal and save my fingers and eyes the pain

sounds interesting
checking the schematic, it's definitely a stock boss sd-1/wylde overdrive circuit with an added active bass boost circuit
the switch messes with the tonestack by putting negative feedback or something
might try that in my oliver sd-10 (old roland/boss licensed brazilian sd-1 clone)

Next on my list was the Maxon OD-9 Pro Plus, but that MXR caught my eye. Well thanks a lot there for the GAS, Agent Orange! (no pun intended, the Vietnam War was gruesome and cruel)

To make your GAS more intense, I run an MXR CAE Boost/Linedriver into the front of the O.D., and I have the rubber boot on the knob so that I can adjust the amount of gain on the fly.  I find this works much better with my Peavey than using a distortion pedal for those times when I need an increase in gain for a lead.  Pushing the gain into the front of the overdrive does the trick
