Marillion - Any Love For Steve Rothery?

Bit of a Marmite band, I think.  I actually really like them, and I surprise myself sometimes just how much I seem to be influenced by Rothery's playing.  And he gets some wicked tones.

Been listening to them a lot recently, both with Fish and Steve Hogarth.  They definitely have some interesting music going on.

Funny you should mention Marillion, I heard a track from their first (or maybe second) album the other day on the radio, reminded me how good they were (are?).  But I really haven't kept up with anything they've done for a very, very long time.

I saw them live once, must have been at the beginning of '84, just before the release of Fugazi.  I liked Rothery's playing, that big fat singing tone he had.  I know they always bridled a bit at Genesis comparisons but I always thought they were a bit like early Genesis, but with Dave Gilmour on guitar.

Same here, and the problem was (for me) that I HATED Genesis and Pink Floyd at the time :lol: (I can remember winding some guys up with "they sound like Genesis but better"!)

I saw them a couple of times, but they weren't really my cup of tea... And I hated the "hit".

But since then (via Jethro Tull) I got heavily into Genesis 10/15 years ago. I even developed a passing regard/appreciation for Pink Floyd... So maybe I might appreciate them (Marillion) a bit more if I heard them now.

Strange you should say that, I can't say I hated Genesis or Pink Floyd but I never really got into them.

I quite like early Genesis (Foxtrot/Nursery Cryme) and I've got a few Floyd albums - I'm quite proud of my copy of The Wall bought on the day of release in 1979 - but that's about it.  One day I'll probably decide to bulk-buy all the albums....

I was always more into Jethro Tull because they had that harder blues-rock element, although again I've only got a handful of the albums.

But..... I don't think I could ever, ever get into Yes!!

My drummer loves Genesis, I don't have much interest in them.

Some Pink Floyd is absolutely great, but alot of their tracks leave me cold.

I have a similar feeling about Marillion, though feel I should give them more of a go. I find some of their stuff a bit twee and lacking in balls. I might be listening to the wrong stuff, but they do have some great tunes. Whenever I solo over a ballad, it usually ends up sounding a bit like them ;)

edit: Lavender is probably my favourite Mariillion.
