Luxxtone El Machete Alder / maple with a Rebel yell ???
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:39:02 PM »
Hi, I've used a Nailbomb / Coldsweat combo in covers bands for the last 4 years in PRS single cuts and Les Paul R8's.
In the past I've used a Relic Strat (rosewood) and dabbled with Crawlers, Holydiver, Miracle Man, Coldsweat and Nailbomb (alnico and ceramic).

I now own a Luxxtone El Machete fixed through body bridge, maple and alder so it's not as light sounding as the trem version. The vid below is of the exact guitar, it's the first one played and has Motorcity 2nd degree blackbelts 8.5k, almost a hot single coil / old PAF feel.
The guitar in person sounds like a low output Les Paul, a lot different to the Strats I have owned probably due to the bridge.

I run through a Dual rec and a traditional 4x12 and play Kasabian, chillies through to Pearl Jam so an alternative indie type of set. Though we don't do metal we do stoke a fire under all these tracks.

So....I fancy a change, I love the openness of the Motorcity pickups but I know that a similarly low output BKP would also float my boat, however I need more output and more mids than this pickup has, I'm pushing it with a Providence final boost and a Suhr Koko mid boost both of which are running at 10 o'clock.

I like a distorted chord to hold its shape, I don't like the chord to fall apart or "bloom". I like a tightish bass, and I like a full sound but it must have cut.
The nailbombs served me well but hearing the MCP made me yearn for a more open sound and a little less output than the nailbomb offers.

I found the crawler too old school
The Holydiver didn't clean up as well as the crawler but had great lead and dirty tones, if the two had a child out of wedlock I would probably buy that pickup.
The miracle man C bomb and coldsweat were too er......ceramic for me.
However this guitar is alder maple and fixed bridge so the results might be different.

I'm tempted to look at the MCP angel dust or perhaps a BKP rebel yell (mainly due to the rebel yell / Luxxtone tone in the vid below). Hard to tell for sure due to the compression but it has cut and doesn't sound too bright.

So, which BKP should I go for?

Guess the rebel yell should work
But if you like the holy diver single note response, take a look at the black dog
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Rebel Yell should give you the cut you want.

The Rebel Yell neck is apparently quite similar to the Cold Sweat neck you already have, but a little brighter.
