Pickups for mahogany PRS
« on: December 12, 2013, 10:46:30 AM »
Hey

I'm looking at replacing the low output pickups in my PRS SE singlecut with something more suited to the bands i'm currently in.

The guitar has a mahogany body with a maple top, a mahogany neck and a rosewood fingerboard. It's slightly less chunky that the USA version and a normal les paul. In terms of amps the rehearsal room has a blackstar ID100, but live it varies but is usually a high gain tube amp.

At the minute i'm in a symphonic metal band (female singer type) and a black metal band and was looking for a high output pickup that could pull off both.

Cheers

I have a Alnico Nailbomb in my SE CU24 and it's very metal. For your styles I would even go ceramic.

The Alnico NB does everything I want except handle low tunings (like C standard). It does however handle drop C pretty well and Open C great.

Does your A-Bomb do C# standard okay? I would have thought it would be okay down to C standard.  I have one and I was thinking of trying it in place of my A-Pig, but now I'm not so sure!!

I don't know, I'll try later for you if you if you want.

But to be honest something happens with the tone when you drop it to C standard. C# might be ok but in C it's like it's loosing the "body" of the tone. It's very difficult to describe and it might also be because of the guitar. All I can say that the combo is not really working that low.

I used to have a set of coldsweats in a PRS SE Tremonti and Nailbomb(ceramic) set in a PRS SE Custom 24. Just a warning though, both sets of pickups felt to me less powerful than the stock pickups they replaced-they of course had more dynamics and a better sound, but i would say that the original SE stock pickups were hotter and had more mids (therefore making them sound quite full yet muddy). So, if you want something that maybe 'feels' hotter i would personally look at the Ceramic Blackhawk.

I think the A-Bomb is a good choice and the Aftermath might be worth a look too, especially if you're using lower tunings.

I've got a Painkiller in the bridge of my PRS Singlecut and I think it'd be a great match for the styles you mentioned.  It handles low tunings easily and actually cleans up quite nicely too.

I'm thinking more Miracle Man with all that warm wood tone on that guitar... or the Cold Sweats as has been mentioned. Mahogany guitars need bright pickups IMO.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
