humbucker humming on high gain
« on: December 18, 2013, 05:58:37 PM »
I have bareknuckle nailbomb on my guitar. i plug it straight to my amp (backstar ht 20) every time i switch of gain channel  with the slightly pass 12 o'clock  my pickup started to hum. my question is it normal for humbucker to hum at that amount of gain. i really need to know , because,  most of the forum i read they said that only single coil would hum and humbuckers won't if what i read was true i think there is a problem with my guitar. can anyone help me with this?

Yeah that's normal ! But single coils actually do make a lot more noise. If that really disturbs you, you should buy a noise gate.

With the style I assume you play the IPS Decimator is pretty great. Got a clone of the normal version and it really gets the job done. Of course it can cut into your sustain, but it can be well set to the point where you can minimise that problem. If you amp has an effects loop there is also the G-string version which is even better and mostly can be set better from what I gather, however also more expensive.

The cheapest and still good option is the Boss NS-2, which is cheaper new and especially second hand. Also a very good pedal, but not as transparent as the ISP. However many like what it imposes on the tone.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

What amp do you have?

Peavey 5150/6505 series have a noise in them (which most people call 'fizz') that kicks in whenever higher gain stages are used in the amp, the ISP Decimator takes care of those.

It could also be one of the tubes.

Change some of your preamp tubes around and see if anything changes, powertubes will be a little difficult to check.

I get a little bit of hum out of bridge CBomb with loads od distortion as well, but absolutely nothing major either serious.
Funny enough I find my neck CS quieter than CBomb if it does make sense.
But once again it`s nothing serious or annoying so I don`t bother  :D

The humbucking effect depends to some extent on the symmetry of the pickup.  The CS neck pickup is symmetrically wound. The Nailbomb bridge pickups are asymmetric.  There's your answer.  Depending on the model of pickup, there might be some noise, but it's a trade-off for a more 'aggressive' sounding pickup.
