Pickup Slection - Need Help
« on: December 19, 2013, 05:34:41 PM »
Hello community,

I'm getting back into writing/recording music after being out of the game for many years. I remember BKP from back in the day and thought now is a great time to give them a go.

I have a Godin Freeway Classic and play through a Vox AC15 with various effects. The freeway has space for Bridge & Neck HB and a single coil mid.

Sound wise I'm working on music like:

Thrice - Alchemy Index (Album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2OmNmV3y4Y&list=PL2AC4389F41FDA4A3
He Is Legend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvMWVPQEheg
68 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2rPlxEhmZc

I want the attack and power for "notey" riffs but also a great sound clarity for melodic rhythm with the heavy layer of gain. I'm also looking for a deep clean tone for some ambient off stuff.

I've been looking at Holydiver or Rebel Yell, I just don't know if I'll be better off with a mix and match or going with a straight set. I also love the clean in the Jugger demo but I think when running high gain they might be to much for what I want to do. So I look to all of you and those with more knowledge and experience with BKP's.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't put rebel yells on a guitar with that much % of maple.

Maybe holydivers with a middle slowhand for versatility.
Black Dog (b), Abraxas (b), The Mule (n), Mississippi Queen (n), Trilogy Suite (m)

Had: Riff Raff 7 (b), Painkiller 8 (b)

This is tough to call as I really hated all of those clips, especially the last one but to me, the sound is too aggressive for the Holydiver. I think I'd be tempted to look at the A-Bomb instead.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Good call. But Divers would match the guitar very well too, with an Irish Tour or Slowhand in the middle. Probably not exactly the tones like in the vids, yet balanced. The A-bomb in that guitar could provide a bit too much agression in the uppermids with a maple neck.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Definitely not my kind of music. Rebel Yell would certainly have the aggression but if you fear that it will be too bright with the guitar you have, then the Alnico Nailbomb would be a step up. So my recommendation would be

Bridge: Alnico Nailbomb
Middle: Irish Tour
Neck: VHII

I recommend the VHII neck because I have had good experience with it as a match for the A-Bomb in the bridge and I don't know the Nailbomb neck. Cold Sweat neck would also work well in the neck spot.

Cheers Stephan
