Need suggestions for two guitars
« on: December 29, 2013, 12:40:03 AM »
Hey guys

Some of you may recall I had a thread about a month ago, I ended up getting a Cold Sweat set and am quite pleased with them. The bridge is great, the neck is decent, but I am happy for now with them.

I have another guitar in a different tuning (D std instead of drop C so no major change) and it is basically the same guitar as the other I put the cold sweats in, other than neck wood which is flamed maple rather than mahogany. They are set-neck singlecuts, mahogany body but with a very thick maple cap, they are basically half maple and quite middy. I play everything from 80's thrash to modern melodic metalcore/death metal. I would like something slightly different from the CS set but not way off, maybe a touch warmer.

I also have a couple sevens which are maple neck-through, the one I want to change the pickups is in drop A (which is like drop D on a six basically so not heavily downtuned) has a spalted maple top and mahogany wings but it is a very middy guitar also and is oddly, a bit dark. Tons of low mids out of it.

I don't really want to mention what I am leaning towards to keep your opinions totally blind, but I will say I don't want piles of output, maybe just a bit more than the CS is ok, but I am not a fan of tons of compression.

If you want something different in each guitar I would probably suggest the following:

guitar 1: ceramic Nalibomb (maybe get the calibrated set, or combine that bridge with a Rebel Yell or VHII neck)

guitar 2: Miracle Man (with either a MM or CS neck)
BLACK HAWKS
IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN
TRUE GRIT

Don't they have a lot more output/compression compared to the CS's though? If not, it's a viable option. Maybe A-bomb is a better choice if the C-bomb is a bit too much.

I was kinda thinking Rebel Yell or Emerald for guitar one but not 100% sold. I'm just wondering if they have enough low end or if the CS has a lot more.

MM crossed my mind for guitar two but I hear it has plenty of low mids which the guitar has already. Was almost thinking Painkiller for this one, or maybe Holydiver if it leans more to high mids rather than low mids.

If the guitar has a lot of low end acoustically - like an Explorer for example - a Rebel Yell or Emerald set - would work well.

I'm not sure if the C-Bomb is more compressed than a Cold Sweat but the Miracle Man is.

I think I will most likely end up with a RY set in the sixer. I actually have a third one too in drop D I will probably put something like Black Dogs in later on.

The seven I have been doing tons of research am thinking maybe Aftermath. It seems more high-mid prevalent and it's not a ton higher output than the CS. Either that or C-Bomb maybe. I liked the BlackHawk too but it doesn't come in the stupid soap bar EMG housing size.
