Wiring assistance
« on: January 07, 2014, 06:00:45 PM »
Happy new year!!
I have an old Kramer having :
bridge: Humbucker mule with 4 wires
middle: SingleCoil (not BK)
neck: Humbucker mule with 2 wires
1 volume pot, 2 tone pots, one DPDT switch (not sure if it's OnOnOn or something else), 1 5-way selector switch

Could someone please advise on how to wire this?
Thank you in advance!

Some informations are missing to give you informed advice.

- What kind of 5-way selector is it? If you do not know, you can just look at it and give the number of switches and contacts.
- Are you sure this is a DPDT? It is weird that you are wondering weither it is a OnOnOn... I think DPDTs only have two possible positions (controling 2 actual switches at the same time).
- Would you by new material? (Changing the switches, go for push/push or push/pull pots...)
- What kind of sound do you want? / What kind of sound do you use?

Hi Skilpad and thank you for answering.
The 5-way selector has four contacts on one side and four contacts on the opposite side.
The alleged DPDT switch is three position switch and i must unsolder the wires to check using a multimeter.
If you take a look http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/sw3.php the way the wires are soldered now, it looks like and OnOffOn and not an OnOnOn..
I don't mind going for new material :) Sometimes, it's better to go for new parts.
The sound I want? It's a difficult question to answer. I think it's a bluesy vintage sound with smooth overdrive, but I also use an old RAT for my distorted powerful sound.

Edit: I 'm looking into something like DiMarzio EP 1108 for DPDT switch, DiMarzio EP 1112 for 5-way selector and three new pots for volume and tone (500k maybe?)
I've seen that BK has also parts like these available but to be honest I don't know anything about them.

The switch sounds like a stratocaster style 5 way

I'd suggest get a standard  wiring diagram (many online) and see if it looks similar

You should be able to treat the neck and middle like strat single coils as they are not 4 conductor

I'd wire the 4 conductor bridge to the DPDT switch first.. If its 'on-off-on' you can get parallel/serial (my fave) or serial/single. If its 'on-on-on' you can do serial/parallel/single

You can then treat the two wires from the dpdt as another strat pickup

Disgrams for dpdt here http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/sw3.php
Got a few guitars - old to new and Boogie kit.
BKPS: Rebel Yell, Holydiver

Love old valve amps... But then I am biased!

I see there are two types of DPDT On-ON-on, look here:http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/3690928-post5.html
Type 1 and type 2 .
Which one is used in the schematic you linked?
