Pickups suggestions
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:27:19 PM »
Hi, I have a Fender jaguar H/H and I plan to upgrade the pickups,
This guitar itself sounds lacks of mids, it's bright and bassy but thin.
So I want to change it to more mid range and high output pups and not to reaction this guitar itself sounds.
Because this guitar itself sounds not so balance
Now I'm looking at HOLYDIVER, PAINKILLER, CRAWLER, JUGGERNAUT and REBEL YELL,
Anyone here please recommend which one to choose,
I play metal and hard rock, using Marshall JCM 2000,
Thanks for help!

Painkiller and Rebel Yell might be too bright in my opinion as there's a lot of upper mids. The Juggernaut sounds very modern to me so it depends if that's what you're after. If the guitar is thin, the Crawler will thicken it up a lot for sure with all the low mids and if you want more mids across the board, the Holydiver is ideal. What style of music are you playing?

He said he plays metal and hard rock in his post. Looks like you missed it  8)

(By the way, I AM gonna put the Holydiver in my V100 tomorrow, and I'll record some clips. It should sound cool ! :P )

And jka… I completely agree with what slarti said. Get yourself a manly manly Holydiver.
If you wanna go over the top, you could try the Juggernaut, but not sure for the hard rock tones.

Thanks, knowing more about how it would sit in a V100 would help me a lot  :D

Sorry I missed the style of music played in the OP, I must still be hungover from New Year! In that case, I think you'll like the Holydiver; it's an awesome pickup and responds really well to an overdrive pedal.

Go for the Holydiver, its mids will sound amazing through the jcm.  I have a demo on my YouTube channel, you should check it out! I can't stop complimenting this pickup.

The two necks which are most paired with the HD bridge are the HD neck and the Emerald neck. Both work brilliantly, so it is mostly down to your taste. If you like necks on the brighter side the HD will be yours, if you like em darker and smoother the EM will do the trick. Neither will sound muddy or anything and both work great, so think about that choice.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I use a Holydiver bridge and I've used both the Holydiver and Emerald neck pups with it. Both are superb. The Holydiver neck has a more vintage tone but with enough cut and is quite bright. It's great for cleans and fast leads. Personally, I use the Emerald neck with my Holydiver but that's only because I prefer the Holydiver neck with Crawler bridge in one of my other guitars. The Emerald neck is thicker and darker than the Holydiver; very smooth and fluid. It's a tough choice and I often find that my preference depends on my mood at the time.

Many thanks for reply, about the neck pickups, another question is
I check the specs of Emerald and Holydiver, the EQ chart Emerald is bass:4, mid:6, treble:7,
and the Holydiver is bass:5, mid:7, treble:6, according to these tone chart the Emerald should be more brighter than
Holydiver,
So why the Emerald is darker than the Holydiver?
Thank you!

The EQ chart is really confusing in that way but Telerocker is spot on. If I play the Emerald neck straight after the Holydiver neck, the Emerald sounds so much darker the difference is extremely obvious. It's surprising because if I had a guitar that suited an Emerald bridge, the Emerald neck wouldn't be anything like the first I'd think of to go with it. The same is true of many pickups in the range, which is why I use an Emerald neck with a Holydiver bridge and the Holydiver neck with a Crawler bridge.

One again: it would be nice when the BKP-team adds more info about the neckpickups on the website.

It would be great if they split the EQ chart into 4 parts, bass, low mids, high mids and highs to be more accurate too.

Maybe we should start a petition to get our demands.  :P
