Need PU suggestions
« on: January 11, 2014, 11:23:54 AM »
Hey all..

Looking to put a new bridge PU in.

I'm working towards an Adam Jones type tone (how original!)

My gear is:

Les Paul Studio (498T currently in bridge).
Mesa Single Rectifier head through a Mesa 2x12
Playing with my tone through a Zoom G% at the moment which I use for EQ and Delay etc only though the FX loop.

Any advice appreciated.

holy diver, black dog, rebel yell or nailbomb
I'd also move the eq to the front
I believe he uses everything in the front of the amps, actually

I'd go alnico Nailbomb for that.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Great - yeah I find my sound is just not warm enough... too sharp and 'attacky'. When I EQ it to a better place it just feels too bassy - and not naturally warm.. it's those sexy but defined mids that I think are lacking which I hope a new PU will assist with.

Nailbomb sounds the go... I thought maybe aftermath but just don't have the experience to make the call so this has helped a tonne!

I haven't tried the Aftermaths myself, but it is said they sound quite dry. Isn't Adam Jones's tone quite juicy ?
Nailbomb can be the answer, but if you want to tame the highs, maybe a Juggernaut could do it. It has been recommended for this tone before.

I don't know how Adam Jones manages to get that great tone out of a JB in a Les Paul Custom.  Gotta be the boner-inducing amps and pedals he uses.

I second the Alnico Nailbomb, although I have no personal experience (the Nailbomb is widely hailed as BKP's capable-of-handling-anything humbucker).

Even if you don't care for the Nailbomb, you might want to stick to looking into humbuckers that use Alnico V magnets.  Almost any pickup with a Ceramic magnet is going to have that 'attacky' tone that you described, as they're great for tight high gain riffing and soloing but they don't warm up.

the nailbomb is quite "attacky" and aggressive
you better go with the diver or black dog
