NGD... Finally
« on: January 22, 2014, 01:52:54 PM »
Took a month to receive it after a lot of messing around but here she is.

The guitar is in a lot worse condition than I thought it would be. The frets are as rusty as $%&# and there are a lot of chunks gone from the guitar that I wasn't told about. The scratch plate has several cracks in it also. After a restring I had a good play around on it and it plays superbly, which really surprised me considering the state of the guitar. Sustain is excellent which might be to do with how heavy the guitar is, it is much heavy than what I was expecting from swamp ash. My Epi LP is only slightly heavier.

The pickups really surprised me also. The bridge pickup is quite nice actually and not nearly as shrill as I was expecting, it can stay for a little while. The neck pickup is shitee, very lifeless and just tends to BOOM at me.

All in all I am quite disappointed, not with how it plays but with how abused and neglected she has been
 :D

I will see about taking the guitar in somewhere to get it all nice and sparkly again  :P

Congrats on the NGD. Hopefully you'll get the axe cleaned up and in great playing condition in the near future.

The scratchplate looks kind of plain so that should be an easy replacement.  Where are the chunks you are talking about?  I see buckle rash and some wear n the V but I think once you have the scratchplate and frets sorted out you will be pretty happy with it.  It is a pretty unusual Gibson.

Sounds like it might be fairly dark sounding.  Could be a good candidate for Riff Raffs, Emeralds or Rebel Yells.

Top of the head stock and both horns. It pisses me off because he only stated about the buckle rash and when asked if there any other marks he said it was unmarked except for the buckle rash. I asked him what the frets were like and he said unworn but slightly discoloured. I didn't take that to mean they were going to be so rusty.

Sounds like the seller was a real prick.

Was it ebay?

All it means really is that you probably paid more than you would have otherwise.  You are still happy to have the guitar, yeah?  It looks like a nice one.  Shame that this arsewipe didn't look after it.

If it's eBay you can always start an "item not as described" claim and get your money back.

Might be a troublesome process if he's not cooperative, though.

My pink SG Junior arrived with these really rusty strings that I would have been embarrassed to sell a guitar with. It also had one of two minor dents the seller hadn't mentioned (he had mentioned one dent).  The frets though were fine, and it cleaned up nicely, so I was okay with it.  Frets though are an expensive business and it sounds like he really misled you there, so you might have a case for some of the cost of a refret.

It was ebay. I shall see what he suggests about the guitar first and go from there.

That is veeeery cool!

I remember drooling when they came out. Swamp ash in a V seems to be a nice choice.

I wouldn't mind the dings. Just polish the frets and clean it up!  8)

My favorite limited run series that Gibson ever did! Congratulations!  :D

Mine is a great player too, interestingly.

They do get scratches and nicks quite easily; they are also quite visible as the original wood is quite bright naturally. I covered some very small ones with black marker so they become more or less unnoticeable.

Nice :D

Sorry to hear it wasn't as described, though. As philly says, in theory you should get your money back but in practice it mightn't be so simple... :( Normally Ebay does side with the buyer, though.

Resolved the issue through ebay. I am going to keep it and he was more than happy to partially refund me a small amount for the frets. Can't wait to get her polished up and go pickup shopping...

Ah, it's a Voodoo!  :D  I've often been tempted to buy one (most likely the SG), but the red skull inlay always makes me a bit hesitant....

As Alex mentioned, that finish seems very susceptible to damage, I've seen lots of them with huge patches of bare wood.  Even if it was mint it would probably end up looking pretty tatty eventually.  Natural relic!
