Windows 8
« on: January 27, 2014, 02:54:21 PM »
I've used just about every version of Windows over the years and never had any problem transitioning from one to another.

But Windows 8 is shite.

Bloody Microsoft pandering to bloody iPad users.

Really? I reckon its the best one since XP, it did take me a short period to get used to it though. The lack of a proper start menu was annoying but a 3rd party program soon sorted that out

The lack of a Start menu is hugely irritating, and that thing where you stick the mouse in a corner and it makes a menu appear only seems to work half of the time.

And it has these things it calls "apps", which make me think of iPhones and iPads.... and since I've never used an iPhone or iPad, and don't know how, I see the term "app" and my instinctive reaction is to steer clear of it.

I've used XP for years, I use Windows 7 in work and have no trouble at all, why did they have to bring in all this "app" rubbish?

I don't use their start menu so I can stay clear of that shite. I recommend the program Vistart, it gives you a proper start menu and allows you to go straight to the desktop view upon startup.

Thanks, I shall investigate that if I'm still struggling with Windows 8 once I get used to it.

Things I never thought I would end up saying about technology: I am with Philly on this one.

Seriously, I share pretty much everything he said and I am what they call a digital native...

Didn't they release an update to fix that? Like Windows 8.1?

Far as I know it got a bit better, but still kinda sucks. Honestly I have not been bothered to install it myself, only heard about it. I do use the Startmenue X though. Not perfect by any means, but an improvement over that bloody tablet thing.

Guess we gotta rely on the old Windows rule: Every second version sucks. Case and point: 95 - meh; 98 - classic; ME - kill it, kill it with fire..........did I mention F*CK IT WITH A RUSTY PIPE; XP - cool; Vista - $%&# it to hell; 7 - welcome back; 8 - wtf MS, seriously, the f*ck; 9 - dare we hope?

Windows 8.1 has some kind of right click start menu that has everything on it... apart from the "all programs" bit... *slow clapping*

I could probably get used to it but on a desktop PC I don't see the point of windows 8 over 7

Yep, that's pretty much my experience (although I never even tried Vista).  My heart sank when they announced 8, I knew I should've got a new PC when 7 was out.  :|

Exactly.... and it's all about the desktop for me...

I'm with you, PQ.

I now own 2 Windows 8.1 machines, one laptop and a DAW that I'm in the process of building.  I got the laptop a few months ago, so I've gotten used to it a little.

I'm an old Windows systems administrator - Win8 was the first time in decades I've come across a Windows OS and thought "WTF?!?!".  It's so counter intuitive to me.

But there are tweeks - you can set it to always boot to desktop.  You can also set it to open up the application list (not the tile screen) when you hit the Windows key.  And as others have mentioned, there are 3rd party apps that make it look way more Windows 7, which is a great OS.

I suppose I'll get used to it, but it's frustrating how they basically just drop you in at the deep end and expect you to cope.  And the way they send new computers and software nowadays.... almost no paperwork, no "instruction manual" to speak of.  This new PC supposedly has a trial version of Microsoft Office on it, for example, but Dell don't provide an activation key so I can't even access it (unless I am just being spectacularly thick....)

Yes, we're all now used to learning by trial and error I suppose, but there's so much that you just never learn or even become aware of.

I had a look at that "Vistart" Jamie mentioned, it looks OK but with things like that I worry that they're going to cause problems with Windows updates etc?

I'll probably just save some shortcuts to the desktop and then go straight to desktop from that stupid "apps screen" or whatever the hell they call it.

You can still buy Windows 7 on Amazon or so for less than a 100 quid.

Windows 7 is my favorite version. I haven't used 8 though, since my newest computer is a Mac.

It took a while to get used to but it's alright. If I need a progr...app that I've not shortcutted on my desktop I just hit the windows key and start typing the name of it. It finds it quick enough.
