Guitar shops in Edinburgh? Please advise
« on: March 15, 2006, 12:27:45 PM »
Hi all,

I am taking 2 days off to visit Edinburgh next week for the 1st time. I hope it is a nice place to visit because i need some steaming off my phd.

Anyhow, i was wondering if there are any good guitar shops worth visiting in Edinburgh with good prices/selection.

What i am interested in

Tokai guitars in stock
THD amps in stock
Boutique FX pedals in stock (CM, EHX, HBE, Roger Mayer, Jacques, BSM...)

I dont need a shop to have all 3 in, i am just hoping to find some Tokais to try on, and a THD flexi 50, alongside FX pedals from the above said manufacturers.

Furthermore if you got any advice in general for a good time in Edinburgh (relaxed drinks, good food) feel free to chime in. I ll be staying about a mile from the city centre.

Hey, there is a GuitarGuitar shop in Edinburgh. I have't been there myself but we have one here in Newcastle and they have Roger Mayer pedals, THD, VHT, Cornell, Rivera, Dean, BC Rich, Godin, Gibson, Fender, zVex, Voodoo, MXR, Keeley, Bareknuckle and some other shitee. It's a good selection, the Edinburgh shop would have similar I'd imagine.

Hey, I live in Edinburgh at the moment and know of a few guitar shops. I can give you the names but i'm terrible with street names so to find them your best bet is searching for them on www.yell.com

1. Scayles - top guitar shop, friendly staff. Not the biggest but they have a good selection of equipment. Currently they're installing my new nailbomb :D.

2. Sound Control - pretty massive guitar shop with a huge selection of stuff. It think there is an even bigger one in Glasgow if you have time to pop across on the train though.

I'm pretty sure there are a few more, but some aren't really near the city centre so I've never had teh chance to go to them. Scayles actually has two shops although one goes by a differnt name. Sorry for the vagueness, hope that helps a bit.

Basicall apart from Tokais i am looking to try a Roger Mayer Concorde+ pedal, a THD Flexi 50, an EHX Memory man.

so if you know anything please let me know, and i hope that Thistle hotel is good

Guitarguitar doesnt have Tokai, but the local one to me has the Mayer, the Memory Man and the THD - check their website guitarguitar.co.uk, that has the list of products they stock. :)

I've been at that guitar guitar in edinburgh. My sis is at Uni there, last summer i went. It has engls, marshall, mesa, vht, stuff like that. It seems to have a good selection, although I was looking at amps, not pedals. It's about 3 miles outside edinburgh, though- you basically head out the road going out the west of edinburgh towards the zoo. Corstorphine road, I think it is, you need to aim for. I think the actual shop is on st. john's road/street, i think the corstorphine road becomes st. john's road. There's a big shopping centre about 50 yards past it (tesco, pc world, mcdonalds) so you can get something to eat while you're there etc.

The sound control is in the grassmarket (i think that's the one). It's not bad, but doesn't hold a candle to guitar guitar. Worth a look because it's pretty close to the centre of edinburgh, though.

I haven't been in scayles, but I know where it is (about 100 yards from my sister's flat, lol). It's on clerk street (or more accurately, st patrick's square, i think)- basically, on one of the main roads into princes street. It's a bit out of the centre, though- you'd probably need to take a bus. Basically, get to the north bridge, and keep walking away from princes street (or get a bus).

I haven't been to scayles' second shop- I have no idea where it is.

Hope that helped.

^i'm really not sure. I wasn't looking for one, so I may have missed them.

Because of that, I don't really want to say one way or the other.

I live in Edinburgh.
If you want anything other than Ibanez, Gibson or Fender... harsh. For amps it's a bit better. Guitar Guitar and Scayles have a decent choice, so do Sound Control. I got to Sound Control because it's the closest to me but I'd never buy much more than strings from them now.

Tokai..? Hahahahhahaha sorry man. No chances...

Scayles' second shop is called Music Live I think. It's up Lothian road, very close to where I live. Nothing much interesting there, but they do second hand stuff.

ah, thansk, i think i know where that is, i'll keep that in mind for the next time i'm in edinburgh :D

unfortunately, it's not much help for the threadstarter... :( edinburgh is a lovely city, but it's not much use for guitars and gear...
