What pedal am I looking for?

I'm pretty sure it's not a distortion, probably the right overdrive or maybe I should be looking at boosters and treble boosters to stack with overdrives?

I'm looking for a pedal that's going to boost the shite out of my Morgan (basically a JMP with a bit more gain) but keep all of the dynamics and most importantly not saturate it into a fizzy, compressed mess.

My gain is beyond early Sabbath but not by a massive amount and I'd like to get High On Fire, Snakes for the Divine levels of gain. Don't tell me I need to run an SLO100 with my Morgan 'cause I can't afford it!  :D though, I have wondered if a JCM800 platform would be more suited than a Plexi. Something like a Splawn?

You do realise this is a paradox? You can't boost something a lot and NOT loose the dynamics.

Either build yourself a Zvex Super Hard On or get someone to build you some. Best clean boost I have tried. Extremly transparent and insanely easy to build. Seriously, this is so small and simple I have it taped to a push pull pot inside a controll cavity of one of my axes (thanks to Juansolo). Simple, effective and really, really good.

Because it is so simple and theoretically cheap it is sure worth a try I would say.


Otherwise: Juansolo Klone, because there is no better OD / Treblebooster out there in my book ;)

Definitely consider a Klon (or klone). The AMZ mosfet boost is pretty cool too...

Did the Colorsound not do the job. That's about the highest gain OD there is. A massive amount of push on tap.

Could send you a Superjudge to try once we have one boxed up. That's got a lot of push as well, but it might be more of a distortion than you're wanting.

For a boost everything pedal, nothing really touches a SHO.

I wouldn't normally consider putting a pedal together myself but maybe I'll see how simple and cheap it is. It could be a fun project. I've tried to do stuff in the past and end up soldering my fingers or the table, I'm terrible at this stuff. I once screwed a pickguard into our floor trying to make holes in it  :lol: I've never played a Klon either but everybody seems to have one!

The CS is ace and I liked that it didn't really do much colouring of the sound (haha) below 70% ish on the gain which is why I'm thinking a boost pedal might be more what I'm after than an overdrive. I'm not familiar with what's what when it comes to boosts, treble boosts etc but the hard on looks like a good place to start looking on youtube.

Like I said, it might just come down to needing a more modern style amp like a JCM, which is why I mentioned Splawn. But I'm not sure I want to go down that route.

Also, the new guitar has much more conservative pickups compared to the Warpigs I've been using. I'm sure that has a bit to do with it  ;)

SLO100s don't have to be so expensive ;)

I would agree with Juansolo's thought that if you wanted to take a Plexi into modded JCM800 territory a distortion pedal might be a better choice.

I have used an MI Audio crunchbox for such in the past, and it is quite affordable. You could also look at an Xotic BB Preamp

I read some where that it can boost like a klon(e), but sounds good on its own as well (which the klon(e) doesn't really do to my ears. It shines when it boosts an already overdriven/distorted tone).

What's a Superjudge, then?

We did some mods to a Rust Driver and it became a Rusty Sheriff... Then we thought, we can do this better and pretty much took it to it's logical conclusion and that's the Superjudge. It's pretty full-on, but sounds great. You can make it sound like a Sheriff, but it's way more versatile than that, now having gain and tone controls. Plus it's much clearer, double the headroom so no chance of op-amp clipping.

Just gotta stick it in a box. Trying to get a friend in Canada to build one as if he likes it, we might be able to persuade him to do some PCBs for it ;)

I'm going to buck the trend and suggest a fuzz with a boost after it for added gain, definition, and tonal shaping.

The fuzz can be anything, but would suggest starting with something in the Muff family.

For the boost, I would recommend something in the dirty/character boost family a la the Rangemaster but with some tonal shaping. Options would include the Catalinbread Naga Viper and AnalogMan Beano Boost.

With this combo I am able to get a wide variety of high gain tones.

I use a Naga Viper clone on the crunch channel of my SLO Clone and it's a great, versatile boost.
