Ebay Sucks
« on: February 28, 2014, 08:03:21 AM »
So, I just sold an amp on Ebay - auction finished Wednesday - I contacted the buyer asking them how they wanted to pay/arrange collection, and nothing.

This the second time it's happened to me (funnily enough, the same amp too!!!).  I don't sell on Ebay much - is this common?  I've been looking around, and it seems that there's no recourse, nothing I can do about it - just stump up the listing fees and try again...

Ebay is really dead. They now pull all international biddings right away into your search to hide the fact that there are really few UK buyers/sellers left. Otherwise a lot would look really empty. Their new strategy (read about it a year ago or so) is to become something of a mix between Amazon and search engine for products.

I've deleted my Ebay account last year btw, mostly out of frustration. Gumtree has worked better for me, and with Paypal you get some safety on Gumtree. It's slower though and takes more time.

As a seller now it's bonkers. I try to ignore it as much as possible, but for some reason some stuff just sells on there.

It's the mark up that kills it. Typical example. If I sell a pedal privately or through a forum and it's paid for by bank transfer. At £100 inc delivery, I'll get £96.30.

However I've sold some stuff on eBay recently and their cut is getting stupid (bear in mind they own PayPal too which will be used to pay for it). I'll put in different rates for delivery so to absorb that (though they take a cut of that now too would you believe it). So to sell a similar pedal it has to be listed at £120 + delivery (was mainland Europe so around a tenner in this case) and my take home was £97.36 on that one.

So near as damnit £19 on a £100 item in assorted fees. Not to mention eBay is utterly stacked against sellers now. I use it as an absolute last resort to get shot of things.

Saying that, things do sell on there, and for sometimes surprising amounts... Especially when compared to TFB which seems to be populated entirely by the pikiest beings known to man ;)

I recently sold an amp head on Ebay, I've never really had any serious issues with it. Ok people 'forget' to pay but if someone else has tried to bid you have 'second chance offer' so you can offer it to them and still sell it. Haven't had to use it before though cos eventually the issue has been resolved.

Any guitar gear I've sold has usually been a cash on collection jobby, that way they can see what they're taking away and I get cash meaning I avoid all that paypal charges cr@p. Works nicely for both parties.

Some people on there are right idiots but you can report and block them. I tried selling a used check shirt on there a few years back, clearly listed and showed in photos the pattern on the check which looked like brown stains but they were genuine marks as part of the design, and the bidder accepts the condition of the item. He complained upon receipt of delivery that it was a 'stain'. Endless messages and disputes commenced, and he was adamant he would get his money back, so he opened a case. I fought until the end but eventually lost and he sent it back and got his money back. Still have that shirt actually, stupid prick.

I still sell stuff on eBay, and manage to get rid of most of it eventually (although I never expect a very good price).  I've only had one or two incidents of late or non-payment (touch wood).

Quite often in situations like yours where I haven't heard from someone for a couple of days, I'm cursing them and moaning about non-paying bidders - then it turns out they've been away or just not had access to their computer for whatever reason, and everything's fine.

John's absolutely right about the creeping eBay and PayPal fees, though.  Taking 10% of the shipping charge is really taking the piss - why should you be expected to lose money on shipping?  But if you increase your shipping charge, it puts bidders off.

At the end of the day, it's still better than part exchange.

Ok, it was to Germany, not easern European, but convincing someone selling a UK only item to ship it to Germany got me my Feline. So, yeah I am glad I asked.

I usually list everything as UK only, but if overseas buyers are interested and they seem OK as regards communication and feedback I'm happy to deal with them.

I had a guy come over from France to pick up a guitar, I sold a PRS to a guy in Poland and another to a guy in Hungary, all went very well and they were all great to deal with. :D

But point taken, it is annoying when you get loads of people asking for international shipping quotes, you spend ages working it out and then in the end they don't bid anyway.

unfortunatley I've had some bad experiences with it, so I must have been unlucky, it only happened once but it was one time too many

Well, the buyer made contact and said that they'll pop over after 11 today.

My next post on this issue will either be joyous, or full of bile...
