Rebel Yell vs The Mule
« on: March 10, 2014, 06:50:54 PM »
Hi all. This is my first post, so be gentle. lol. I was recently watching a video of Steve Stevens demoing his new SS100 amp at his he studio. In the video, he says that he has a Mule in the bridge of the guitar. Great... I'm gonna order a Mule, because that tone he's getting is my ultimate Les Paul tone. However, I saw on a forum where he says it's actually a Rebel Yell in the bridge. So now I'm confused as to which pickup to order. I want that chewy thick tone that he's getting in the video below. If any of you guys could offer some assistance, I would be truly great full. Thanks!

I think whatever he said he used in this video was a mistake.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

That's a Rebel Yell if I've ever heard one.

I have both these pickups in similar Eclipses. Steve Steven's tone on White Wedding is pure, overdriven Mule but the Rebel Yell is also a very good pickup with a slightly more modern sound.

Both great BKP's, just different. Like Darkandrew says the RY is more modern sounding (and hotter), although it has some classic vibe. The Mule is an opensounding, dynamic vintage PAF that handles gain amazingly good. If you're looking for the ultimate '59 PAF-replica, look no further.

Thanks guys!  I ordered a Rebel Yell. I do definitely want to check out a Mule as well. That will have to be the next BKP I purchase.

Great freaking choice. I would not live up to my reputation if I did not at this point tell you that you should really play with the height on these pubs. All BKPs are sensitive to height changes, but the RYs probably most of all. Half a screw turn can make quite the difference. Seriously.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Just to backup Kiichi above, the RY is a great pickup but you do need to find that "sweet spot" with pickup height and you may well end up with the pickup a lot closer to the strings than you would normally (especially if you have gone for covered and are used to open coils) but they are definitely worth the effort. Enjoy!

Yeah, I did order it covered. I've heard that height can make a big difference with these pups. I'm looking forward to getting them in.

Love the mules. From the clips I have listened to and videos I have seen, they can take a ton of gain and sound wicked in les pauls. Let us know how the RY are, I'm new to BKP and I'm curious to all the pick ups

Rebel Yells are great - still love mine in my Les Paul Custom.

BTW: Steve Stevens would probably sound great on any guitar he gets his fingers on. I remember having seen him at the Frankfurt Music Fair in the mid 80s where he played at the Hamer booth. Absolutely killer tone.

Cheers Stephan
