Pickup to brighten up a seven string
« on: March 11, 2014, 06:40:41 PM »
I have a maple neck through/alder body Jacksonwith a WCR IceBucker in the guitar.  It sounds good, but I'm not 100% it sounds "me".   It's a pretty balanced pickup, and the guitar is kind of dark.   I like the dynamics of the lower output, so I'm not really sure I want a "modern" pickup.   I'm thinking that a Riff Raff would really do what I want, but I'm also considering the Black Dog or Emerald.   Listening to the modern metal clips the Riff Raff sounds great to me, and the Emerald sounds a bit dark.  My experience with the Emerald in my guitar is that it is not dark at all, so I'm worries the Riff Raff might be overly bright.

I've tried most of the BKP modern range in different guitars.   I hated the Warpig and Miricle Man, and didn't care for the Painkiller or Cold Sweat.   I love the ceramic Nailbomb in my 6, but I'm thinking that might be too much output for the 7.   My other 7 has a set of VHII is in that I love in that guitar, but it's a completely different construction (all mahogany w/ a 3/4" maple top).  I have an Emerald in one of my guitars that is mahogany/koa top w/ bolt on maple neck.   It sounds good, but is pushing being too thin - which is why I'm considering it for the 7.

Anyone have any thoughts on these pickups?

I had a Riff Raff but it was a RG (basswood). It was bright but not overly so. Very good pickup, but sold the guitar.
Black Dog (b), Abraxas (b), The Mule (n), Mississippi Queen (n), Trilogy Suite (m)

Had: Riff Raff 7 (b), Painkiller 8 (b)
