Noob recording help!
« on: July 07, 2014, 03:36:48 PM »
Hi,

I want to start recording guitar. I have Cubase 5, and was given an EMU-0404 as my friend no longer wanted. I used to record at school using Cubase by plugging a Line 6 POD into a mixer and then into Cubase which was pretty easy to do. I am recording mostly to remember tracks and to send ideas to people so don't need great quality.

What is the best way for me to record? Can I plug my guitar into the EMU-0404 and then straight into the laptop? Or do I need to plug guitar into POD (I don't have one yet so would need to buy) into EMU-0404 into laptop?

I have a mixer and some active monitors as I DJ too, so if needed could just plug the POD into the mixer like I did previously, just i am unsure what the EMU-0404 actually does? Might be being thick, but on a pod or a modulator like that, it has lots of pre-built sounds you can use, so not sure whether I'd need to attach something else to the EMU-0404.

Thanks, and if you need any more information please let me know.

For what you need I'd suggest plugging a Pod straight into your laptop and ignore the EMU-0404 altogether. If you want to record a real amp (and you have a mic) then the EMU will be useful, but I think that sounds like more fuss than you need.

There are plenty of free software amp simulators and cab sims that you can load into cubase so you could just plug directly into the emu

That is a very good thought.

Not sure what sound you want but always heard good things about the TSE x50 (5150) plugin and last I checked Redwirez had their Marshall 1960 cab impulses as a free download on their site, which you could load into a cab plugin like LeCab
