Gojira

I'm a fan of lots different types of music particularly prog, metal and therefore prog metal too.

This band keeps coming up but every time I listen to them I just cannot see what the fuss is about AT ALL.  I'd go as far as to say they irritate me.  I;m not creating this post to be confrontational I just wonder if im missing some thing?

I think its likely I just dont like them but if there are any fans can you point me in the right direction re their best songs etc?

Also if any one doesnt like them please chime in because I feel like im in a minority here.

Warning:  Pretty useless post coming up:

I bought From Mars to Sirius years ago because (a) I liked the cover art and (b) I thought the band must be fans of old Japanese monster movies.

It was OK, they seemed pretty good at what they do but it's not really my kind of thing, especially the vocals.  I didn't listen to it much.

Out of interest, are there other bands playing a similar style of music who you do like?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Well yes and no.  No because I think they sound kinda boring but yes because 'people' insist theye classified as prog metal.  I dont hear any thing progressive about them other than they do concept albums though.

I wouldnt bother but I want to give them a chance.  It took me a while to get into mastodon but when it clicked it was one of the best bands id ever heard so I do believe in giving some bands a chance but to be fair with mastodon I never though they werent good it just didnt click with gojira it all sounds pretty g++++ to me so far.

I agree with Frank Zappa when he said 'progressive' means different from the norm but I think it all fits into a certain style too that all makes sense.  I can see how early genesis and pink floyd can belong in a progressive genre with queensryche and tool too.  I dont get how Gojira fit in with it.....they sound like a dull metalcore type effort to me at this point.

You must forgive my ignorance, but isn't metalcore that stuff which mixes up big riffs, growly-shouty-vocal verses and melodic Linkin Park choruses?

I wouldn't chuck Gojira in with that, from what I've heard.  I don't know the names of the bands, even, but the metalcore I've heard all sounds exactly the same - which is anything but progressive.

I know where you're coming from with Mastodon, I like them a lot but getting into their music is definitely hard work.  You can't just put one of their albums on and love eveything first time.  It takes a few listens to pick out the interesting little bits which really grab hold of me, then I find myself sort of enduring the parts I don't like because I know there's a good bit coming up.   What does come through is some intelligence and the feeling that these are good musicians actually interacting with each other to construct something interesting, rather than just playing music-by-numbers.

I wouldnt say Linkin Park were metalcore but I havent listened to any thing theyve done since their first album and the odd song here and there id say they were more 'nu metal'.

Best example of a metalcore band would be killswitch engage but theyre good.  Id say gojira sound like some sort of metalcore/deathcore type effort i.e a watered down version of real metal!

Yeah, I wasn't saying Linkin Park are metalcore, definitely not!

I'm just thinking about stuff that I've heard - like Bring Me the Horizon, Asking Alexandria for example - when they have those melodic sections with clean vocals and usually a bit of synth/electronic noise in the background.... those bits all sound to me like they've been ripped off from Linkin Park songs.

I guess that's probably the more lightweight end of the metalcore spectrum, though.  Maybe slightly more "electronicore" than "metalcore".....?

Ah, what do I know?  I should stick to my doom/stoner/retro stuff instead.  :lipsrsealed:
