I just carnt effing decide
« on: July 14, 2014, 10:37:22 PM »
I know this question depends on what I want to achieve but....

Juggernaut set

Or

Miracle man - cold sweat

With the juggs I worry about not enough top and too tight a bottom.

With the cold/man combo I worry about too much throatyness and fizz, and harsh cleans for the bridge (MM).  Too piercing for the neck (CS)

This is for basswood body, maple neck, floating trem. Std tuning.
I don't care about styles here because this is about me just exploring my improvisation stuff.

I wonder if the mid heavy Jugg will be too much with a middy basswood body.

Maybe a CS set?

I have a Cold Sweat neck pickup and doubt that it will be too piercing in the highs.

I can see how the Miracle Man can be fizzy but it has a great reputation in maple neck guitars.  No idea on the cleans from the MM

I would tend to go with that option over the Juggs though

I'd go with the Miracle Man/Cold Sweat set and I admit that view may be affected by my dislike of Juggernauts. Nevertheless, The Miracle Man may not have the best cleans on the planet but it's still quite a versatile option that will lend itself to a variety of styles. It should suit your guitar very well. The Cold Sweat isn't piercing at all either, which is something I assume you're anticipating from the EQ chart, which relates to the bridge and not the neck.

I love the mm bridge clean tones
the high E can get a little piercing with strong picking in some cases, but it's definitely not harsh
it has a lot of dynamics and it cleans up pretty well with soft picking, even on high gain channels
working the volume knob makes it quite versatile
also, it has one of the best splitted humbucker tones I've heard
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks guys.

@slarti - what is it you don't like about the juggs?
I am anticipating the high spike from the EQ on the bkp site and my experience with the vhii neck.
Plus your promotional efforts with the emerald neck make me second guess the CS.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Juggernaut at all, it just doesn't seem to be my thing. The specs sound great but every clip I've heard just sounds to Djenty and even if it is more versatile than I am hearing, I suspect there will still be better options for me. Having said that, to each their own and if that's the tone you like, I'm pleased for you.

As for neck pickups; yes I like the Emerald but that isn't to say the Cold Sweat is bad. If you want to shred it's fantastic and I wouldn't say no to another one but personally, I prefer both the Emerald and the Holydiver neck pickups. I really struggle to choose between those two!

I don't know for sure but, i would assume so as Misha Mansoor seems to favor basswood bodies.

I have both pickups, the Juggernaut and the Miracle Man.

In many ways, the Juggernaut is simply the "better" pickup: it's more refined, tighter, crunchier. It has a better clean sound, and its many upper mids make it sit better in the mix. Still, while my head says Jugg, my heart prefers the Miracle Man. It just sounds bigger, more brash and has more attitude than the somewhat stiff and controlled Juggernaut.

It's really like Periphery as opposed to Zakk Wylde in his best days. One can be characterised as complex, progressive, with a busy mix and lots of details, the other is about drinking beer, heavy metal and kick-ass riffing.

On a more neutral note, I think the Miracle Man does have better harmonics for soloing and its lead tones just sound a bit better than the Juggernaut's (which aren't bad at all!).

I should also add that I use both in mahogany body/set neck guitars.

Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I'm waiting to get my guitar back from the shop with Juggernauts installed. I can let you know how I like them compared to the JB/'59 set that was in there before, but I don't know how much it'll help you, as it's a mahogany body/neck with an ebony fretboard.

Edit: It IS a set neck, but these are my first BKPs so I can't compare it to anything else. It also has a hard tail bridge and it's tuned to Drop B, so there's not much in common here.. I'll post up nonetheless.

Re the Juggs.  They do, in fact, have a very modern voice to them.  If you don't like the voice of the pickup, the versatility and feel won't make up for it.

They would co-operate fine in a super strat and sound fantastic, but it comes down to what sort of a tone you are looking for.

Thanks guys, some great input there.

I will be getting both in the future as well as a middle single coil for each. A trilogy suite or sinner for the juggs and a slow hand for the CS M M combo.
