Johnny Winter RIP

It appears Johnny Winter has died, aged 70. Always been one of my favourite guitar players and voices of the blues. He did a great interview in Vintage Guitar magazine earlier this year where he still seemed full of ideas and passion. Very sad day if confirmed.

Oh bugger, I hadn't heard about this.  Totally unexpected although he hasn't looked very healthy for many years.

I don't own very many of his albums,  just Johnny Winter And.... Live and some other '70s stuff, but I've always really liked what I have heard.

I hope gwEm will play his white Flying V tonight in memoriam.

The interview he gave in VG earlier this year really seemed to suggest he'd sorted a lot of his health problems out. He'd recorded a new album, which I think was/is supposed to come out in September, and he seemed to be on a roll again. All very sad.

I believe I will. I don't know any of his songs however. He plays in a style quite far away from my own. Perhaps it will be good for me to learn a bit from his repertoire.

This is what started it all for me. 12 years old in 1970 and heard this on a sampler album called 'Fill your head with Rock'. Still send shivers down my spine. There's more ideas from JW in my playing than from anyone else. Not than I come anywhere close. I'll raise a glass or two to you tonight.

T'was sad to hear. I too thought that he had sorted many of his health problems. A great player.

Sad news indeed. He was one of my early influences besides Clapton, Michael Schenker and Gallagher, right up with Dickey Betts and Duane Allman. Saw him live twice but the most memorable concert was back in 1983 in my hometown. He even topped what he did on his "Captured" album.

I will now play my Firebird in good memory of that concert.

I spent an hour or two last night watching Johnny Winter clips on YouTube, including an interview from March 2014 in which he looked very frail and seemed to be having trouble breathing, which was sad to see.

There are some great live clips though, I love that supercharged version of "Jumping Jack Flash" from the Old Grey Whistle Test.

It even inspired me to pick up a guitar and actually play for a bit, which I haven't done much recently.

Childhood hero, saw him live  25 years later in New Orleans. Unique voice and fierce playing, love it
