I need new pick ups, stat.
« on: July 19, 2014, 04:32:24 AM »
Hey there!

I've got 2 guitars in need of new Pup's. Not really sure which one's to buy...

The first is my new JP6 I just got, I love it. But I've used the Crunch Lab Liquifire set for a long time for time and it's leaves me wanting more, even more so in this guitar. It's abit muddy, and leaves me wanting more clarity. I like the mid range crunch. Lacks abit of punch and the high end isnt anything to write home about. The guitar is Basswood body, Maple neck bolted on, rosewood fretboard, and it has a trem.
I've been checking out the Aftermath, and The Holydiver bridge and VHII neck. I've been really interested in the VHII neck.
For the bridge I need tight, punchy, clear, and decently hot. Something that "djents" well. Good chord clarity. But I also need to be versatile, I use that guitar in a Emo band as well. (I know it's alot to ask of a pick up).
For  the neck, I just need a good clean pick up. I've been looking at the VHII because I noticed the Safety Fire using it and I really like their clean tone. It's smooth and super clear.

The Second guitar is my LTD SCT-607b. Alder, maple neckthru, ebony fretboard. The EMG's are awful, no dynamics, fizzy, thin, muddy, and WAY to dark. It sounds like a blanket is over that guitar. I just need a good punchy hot Djenty pick up in the bridge thats clear and has "purr", and a good clean neck pick up that will match well with the bridge. I've been looking at the Aftermath for that guitar but I've heard it'll sound to thin.

Thanks for any help.

-Jared

For your Jp6 i think that you should check the juggernaut and as you stated the Holydiver . Maybe the nailbomb too . Hope that helps :)

How tight is the holydiver? I've really been considering this set alot recently. But I've never really had good luck non-ceramic bridge pick ups before in the past.

I am sure Bare Knuckle pickups will make a difference . I , personally , don't hold much wisdom on the Holydiver . I know that is designed after Doug Aldrich 's tone . I also know that is a very very good pickup for lead work . It's not as tight as the jug ... it's higher in output than the ceramic nailbomb but don't necessarily tighter... in the same ball park i would say . oh and it's the growl galore :)

But keep asking about the tightness problem...there are some users who know this pup like the back of their hands and they wil sure be able to help you . I just pointed some things out .

??????
Holy diver was based more on the tone of the OLD Duncan JB.

There was a previous version of the Holydiver that was a 13 k ceramic , but that ended up being too close to the revised version of the Cold Sweat, and also the Rebel a Yell when it was developed for Steve. So Tim shifted the Holy Diver to  have a new role as a JB style pickup .
If any player would be associated with the Holydiver it would be Vivian Campbell

Feline , you're right . I was very tired and accidentally confused Doug with Vivian !! Really sorry for that !!

If you want something clear for the JP6, the lower vintage pups are also good. Riff Raff and the Mule would balance out in the basswood. The HD might have too much mids for that guitar, but won't know for sure unless you take the plunge on one. Those two would also make great neck pups.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

I've heard alot of good things about juggernauts. Would they be to bright in my guitar? For as much good as I've heard about them I've heard just as much bad. I listened to an AM vs Jugg clip, and the aftermaths really slayed them..

As for the HD if you think it'd be to mid heavy maybe I'll not go that route as I'm way more of a Ceramic bridge pick up kinda guy.  I just really liked the sound the of the VHII neck, and the sound The Safety Fire has right now.

And for the lower out put pick ups, I'm not huge fans of that. I like hot pick ups for sure. Just not to crazy hot. I played the C-bombs, they sounded good, but to hot for me.

i'm fairly certain the Juggernaut was MADE for basswood specifically in mind. i've never used the aftermath but from what i've sort of gathered , the jug seems to be a more versatile aftermath. its not super grinding metal right off the bat but it could easily get to that with the right set up. i feel like the aftermath is almost purely a metal pickup and the juggernaut covers a bit more ground.

The Aftermath might be too middy.  Juggernaut would be a better bet.

Also considering a Jugg/VHII set for the JP6.. Would that work out well, or would it sound unbalanced in output?

i'm pretty sure the jugg neck is very similar to the VHII neck but matches the jugg a little better while still keeping the same essence.
