Def Leppard tones
« on: July 21, 2014, 06:37:07 PM »
I constantly ask myself if the Rebel yell will provide that crunchy  low gain tone of Def Leppard ( think White Lightning , love bites , animal...)I know it has some output but it's also very dynamic so i wonder if it can go down to that classic rock mid crunch  . I plan to put this pup in an Epiphone Lp ( mahogany body with maple top and mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard )  . What do you say .

Oh , and since my other posts were deleted I will ask again how good is the RY for rhythms ( i know the leads are killer )??

Not familiar with Leppard too much, but the RY sure can crunch as heck and is made for LP types. The bottom end is tight and punchy and the upper mid spike makes for that really rocking screaming agressive sound, rounded out by the lively high end comprised of harmonic overtones. Really shines when you put on the gain, but classic rock levels work well too, although it has to be said that vintage and vintage hot range are better there (Emerald for example).

I always say things along the line of "classic tone faithfully brought to the present", cause it really does that. It has that old school sound, the heart and mojo, but is also super defined, tight, clear, and cutting.

Lives for the 80s hairmetal tone, but can do a lot more.

The bridge delivers what I think is an awesome lead sound because of all the overtones, which also allow you to have harmonics fly all over the place (think Skid Row solos), even on the high strings around the 12th!
For rythm it is punchy, up front, screaming like a rock singer at his prime....and really unforgiving as heck. Screw up and damn, you will hear it. Play it right and it is insane, absolutly stunning rock and metal sound, up front, screaming more, more, more.

Well that turned out to be rant...hope it helped a bit. xD

Yup , this helped a lot . I never liked the emerald samples ( loved the Riff Raff but i could use the extra output that's why i'm here :)  ) ...something was missing . Ry seems more like my style and taste . I tend to move a lot when I play and that unforgiving quality may be a problem  but it should boost my playing skills .

You mentioned that  "it lives for the 80's hairmetal " . I ask if you could name 3 or 4 let's say popular bands....i am still learning the difference between the genres and that would also help me create an idea of how this pup sounds . Thanks :)

i used the rebel yell pickup in a les paul for a while. while the bridge was definitely a nice pickup, the neck was even better. really awesome set.

Depending on how much meat you have in your Les Paul, the RY set may or may not work well in terms of the bottom end.

You might want to consider the Cold Sweat as well.  I think it gets you into the same tonal ballpark but with less upper mids and more lows and low mids than the RY.  It definitely has an early '80s British feel about it.

thanks man.

i definitely think it lends itself a bit more to modern tones than classic tones like def leppard but i guess it really depends on the rest of your set up. i use a mesa boogie and its pretty high gain but if your amp was more of a classic tone, i think it would work great. i'd say its a happy balance between tight and open. it can cover a lot of ground

Well, I am not a great source for that, cause I am too young to really know a lot. I grew up on 60s to 80s music, but a lot of people here have loads more knowledge than me.

However, tones I think the RY is great for (lotta 80s hair metal, modern 80s inspired powermetal, and other stuff heavy on that high mid scream) include: Ratt, Skid Row, Edguy, Avantasia, Blink-182, Dropkick Murphys, Fall out Boy, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, My Chemical Romance, etc.

Ratt and Skid Row are probably the best examples in my mind.

I always think that all the great 80s metal sounds can be divided into three categories, all covered by either the Holy Diver, Rebell Yell, and Miracle Man. The Holy Diver does that full, warm, musical sound. Growly, a bit coarse, etc.
The RY does the punchy, screaming, rocking, up front kinda thing.
And the Miracle Man has the ceramic chug, the treble scream, slight mid scoop (not actually scooped). Really mean in comparison.

They all do different sounds and work best in different body types and woods.
