Effects loop problem or pedal issue?

A little while ago I managed to snag an Egnater 20 head and Tweaker cab from evil bay. It was reasonably priced but had some scratchy pots so took it in for a healthy check and it needed 2 x el84s and a pre-amp valve. As the amp has no reverb I did some research (and consulted the forum!) And eventually got a tc electronic mini hof (the new toneprint one which has to be powered by an adaptor. Anyway, it sounded sh*te in front of the amp, utterly awful regardless of the setting, either on amp or pedal. I had to reduce the reverb to virtually nothing just so I could use it. Having done a bit more research I decided to place it in the effects loop. Here odd things started to happen. While the pedal was off (and on true bypass) i could get a signal but as soon as I turned it off it cut off my signal completely so I couldnt hear the guitar at all! I think that the effects loop needs attention but I wanted to find out whether anyone had experiences a similar problem and what they did about it.

So if the pedal is in the loop and "off" and you get a signal? Because the pedal is true bypass it's the same as just having a patch lead going from the send to return jacks of your loop.

Now, If you then turn the pedal "on" (no longer bypassed) and you get no signal out of the amp any more, I'd say that is a problem with your pedal.

Try a different pedal in the loop and see what happens.

Have you cleaned all of your jacks and cables with contact cleaner?
