Modding the humbuckers...
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:41:19 PM »
I already ordered the RY bridge and  Emerald neck but now I'm thinking that I could get more from my humbuckers .

   1) the RY is not very hot and I wonder if a coil-split will work ....which coil do you recommend for the bridge : the inner coil or the other ??

   2) i know nothing about the series/parallel sound difference so I thought about asking you . How would you explain it ?? and will it be useful ??

Any modification is made by a technician !! :) I wait for your opinions , explanations , ideas :D

1) Usually deffo the inner coil, which should be the slug. The screw is closer to the bridge where there is less string movement, so even brighter and less powerful sound.
If you go split you might wanne consider adding a 2k resistor in series with the split path. This is often refered to as the PRS style split. What it does is that the coil is not completly turned of by entering a resistor that works as a static volume pot you can just switch in. That way you retain a bit more power and fullness. Nothing groundbreaking, but worth it imho.

2) Series/Paralell is something a lot of people swear by as an alternative as it stays humcancelling and also gives single coil-ish sounds. Also more balsy than splits usually. My experience with this is limited thus far, but it is on my list of things to try more for the future.

Thus far I was more of a split guy myself, but note that I only use the split alone with my Crawlers, which are known to split superbly. On the other guitars the split is always activated automaticly in certain positions. On the HSH it is in 2 and 4 together with the middle single coil and on the HH I use Petrucci style auto split middle.

Will soon rewire one neck PU for series / parallel and as soon as I get some more push pulls I will probably mod 2 necks and 1 (maybe 2) bridge(s) that way as well.

If you are not combining the split Ry bridge with something else I would recon the series / parallel would be better for you. However you can never really tell until you tried it.

Thanks . I will go for the series/parallel then . The problem is that i ordered 2 push-pull pots and I still don't know what to do with the other . I'll figure something out :)

i never combined my humbuckers ( i honestly don't have any serious reason...they never got along with each other the way i hoped it would) . So my middle position is always free.....think of doing something there too . Maybe a single-single or a killswitch to cut down the unwanted feedback if it occurs (and to silence my guitar when i don't play it ) .

I have the same issue with 2 HBs together. Only like it on my 10th Annyversary set. With all the others I have the Petrucci thing. That means when in the middle position I get both HBs split. That makes for a nice strat-ish sound. Certainly usable, especially with more modern HBs.

One possible wiring option to try for you with two push pulls is have one series / parallel for each HB. That might also make the middle position interesting.  Gives you three new options sides the boring one just using two normal HBs.
