PRS SE semi hollow
« on: September 08, 2014, 11:21:32 AM »
Hi

i have recently bought a PRS SE semi hollow which is a great guitar but the pups are a bit muddy, I was thinking of upgrading it with BKP, I have heard that cold seats may be suitable, are there any others like VH and is it an easy job to do. Has anyone already done an upgrade on this model guitar ?

any advice appreciated

Regards

Bob

I got a pair of humbucker sized p90 (MQs) in a semi hollow and they really sound good. It covers anything from clean to hard rock/old school metal.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

I would not go for Cold Sweats in this semi-hollow. Might be a little too scooped.

What kind of music you play and what tones you're after. It could be helpful if you tell is what amp(s) you have.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I can echo both posts here so far. The MQ is a wonderful set that is faaaar from muddy and lovingly sensible to semihollows for a wide range or styles.

However as Telerocker notes information on style and tones are essential, with the amp playing a large role too. While the MQ is brilliant there are always choices, and now we have to determine what those are for you. Then you got the torture of choosing between the pickups that do what you want...usually you got multiple ones who do it well brilliantly, but all with their different flavour.

Oh, and yeah, Cold Sweats are something I would also discount with the construction method. Brilliant in LP style guitars, but when you go semi hollow things change.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Unfortunately I could not get any information on the PRS SE designed Treble and Bass pickups. That would have been somewhat helpful if they were higher output models because then any lower output pickup would provide more clarity. Since semi solid guitars often tend to get boomy I would stay away from high output pickups, especially for the neck pickup.

Without more information on playing style, music to be played and amp set up I cannot give a more specific recommendation at the moment.

Cheers Stephan

Thanks for all the advice, I play classic rock and blues, from zz top, ac/dc, zep, santana , thin lizzie , gary more type blues. that about covers it I play mainly through a peavey envoy 110 transtube and go through a zoom G2.1NU and also a bad horsie wah, I have recently bought a POD HD500X and will use that once I figure it out, I also have a fender mustang amp that I sometimes use but the peavey is the main one. I have quite a high end guitar collection but bought the SE semi hollow for its lightness as its easier on the back when practicing it just lacks something in the sound department compared to my other guitars

Also I have never changed pups, it looks fairly straight forward from what I`ve read and seen on youtube, is it fairly straight forward ? its something that I wand to learn about

keep any advice or tips coming please

thanks  Bob

Just get the Abraxas-set! A little hotter and fuller in the mids than Mules with some nice compression, but with the same classic PAF-vibe. Excellent for the styles you mention. Vintagehot is the way to go here.
