Anyone get pain in the wrist playing an 8 string?
« on: September 26, 2014, 08:53:31 PM »
Got a new guitar and some Juggernaut 8s.... and I'm getting a pain in my wrist when playing lower down suddenly. The weird thing is I've been absolutely fine playing 7 strings for the last two years.

I was playing it loads and then this pain started on the outside of my wrist, so I stopped for about half an hour. I went back and it started again. I didn't play again the next day, went back to it and within the hour the pain is back.... WTF....

Can't believe this shite -  been playing my 7 and I get a slight pain probably because I've inflamed the joint in some way  but  nothing serious.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I would guess that is it down to a different picking angle than you are used to. That might likely be something that calms itself down if you do not stress it a lot and be easy about it. Like back in the day when you learnd barree chords. In the ned your wrist has to do different positions than usual and if you do them in the usual way that puts a lot of strain on that. So maybe take it really easy for a couple of weeks and it might just go away.

Only a guess here.

I suspect this is in the LEFT wrist due to the strange angles this is making your wrist take in order to fret the low frets - is this correct? The switch from a a seven to an eight should have little effect on your right hand (if you are left-handed obviously we are talking about pain in your right wrist here).

Is this right?  Could be a number of things, but I suspect tendonitis and/or carpal tunnel.

If you get numbness in your hands that could be due to any effect of the guitar on your neck posture.

Yeah it's the left hand - going to the docs next week, playing the 7 is fine now dunno why that extra string is causing this many problems . Gutted

Increase in the angle of your wrist?  That's the first place I'd look.  It makes the tunnel more pinched.

Been in a Flying V mood for a while. Went to play a strat at my last gig and my wrist was in definite discomfort. Definitely something to do with the angle of the wrist. The V neck is further from my body, and since i have long arms this helped. Also I probably needed a while to get used to the strat. Perhaps you could get a different 8 string, thats what i'd do anyway.

Going to a physic or specialist is advisable if it persists into a longer term problem as if you catch these things early you should be able to save yourself from problems further down the line. Good luck with this, maybe you just need a few weeks off to clear the head and it will be OK?

Cheers

ah bollocks the pain is back - I'm gonna sell it absolutely gutted, what would be a fair price peeps?

The guitar is virtually new - cost me £420, pickups £260, installation + setup, £80 so outlay was £760. Reckon I can get £600 for it??
