Which Pick up?
« on: March 20, 2006, 07:31:16 PM »
Sorry about if the post has been covered before, but this is my first foray into the forum world.

I've play a Yamaha Pacifica 112 for longer than I can remember and am looking to change the bridge pickup.  Was thinking of following the heard and getting a Duncan or a DiMarzio but the reviews made me think otherwise.

I play mostly rock (lots of early VH / Nuno / Dramagods). I'm looking for a powerful yet versatile pickup for gigging - getting those harmonics jumping off the fretboard while maintaining clarity (almost clean when the volume is turned down to about 4.)

I was thinking of either the VH2 for the versatility or the Miracle Man for the crazy toddler-on-a-sugar-rush high gain.

I was just wondering if anybody have any suggestions?

Welcome!

They're great guitars for the £££££

If the guitar's nice and resonant a VH2 will sound pretty good in there. They work nice in an alder body - but although the harmonics are there the VH2 can't push an amp like the high gain modern pickups like the Miracle Man.  The VH2 is old school Hot PAF, bags of harmonics and crunch.

As dave_mc says, the Nailbomb is a great choice, probably the most versatile pickup in the BKP range, enough for modern styles, bags of grind and harmonics but when you back off the gain the vintage tone is still there.

The Miracle Man is lots of fun but not as versatile, has bags more low end from the ceramic magnet but has less upper midrange which is where the Nailbomb shines through

I'd fall in line with HJMs comments and also add a Crawler............slightly warmer than a NB with a hint more vintage tone about and they always sound great in HSS format as they split  really nicely in pos 2.

I agree with the pickups mentioned but i must add that the Abraxas strangely does a cool Nuno style tone.Well it did for me anyway.

Yeah, the Pacifica's are fantastic.  Especially for the price.  In my last band I recorded one of the guitar tracks on our demo with my mates Pacifica instead of using my own SG or JEM.  The sound just worked better for the part.  :)

And welcome sv.  I've just had some Nailbombs fitted to my SG and will hopefully get some clips up tomorrow.  :)

Thanks for the advice everybody!

I've been listening to the sound clips from the other forum section and think I might go for the Nailbomb for the power and versility.

I have to say i've not yet found a bad review anywhere on the web (... is somebody out there winding me up?) but I have to say i'm really looking forward to experiencing it myself.

The Pacifica is a great guitar and 13 years on I thought I'd treat her (and myself) for my birthday and while I've not even got it on my guitar yet I feel myself thinking about the single coils to accompany it ... hmmm.

I'll try and get a picture of it when it's installed and perhaps some sound clips up too

Yeah, I was curioud about the review and looked scanned through most of them on HC. Most are 10s, maybe 1/3 9s, a couple of 8s and one 1!!

Someone thought an apache sounded 'thin'. Methinks he wanted it to be a warpig

My old Pacifica resonates more than my Organic. Believe me that's saying great things about the Yamaha!
Plays nice too; honestly IMO there's no logical reason to buy, for instance, a Mex Strat over a Pacifica 112 these days.

Man if I'd stuck with that guitar I could have bought pups for every day of the week......

I've only played the nailbomb so I can't comment on any of the others.

I love my nailbomb it sounds amazing, great clean, nice amount of mids, great crunch. I'd buy another.
