Flat '50 pickup height
« on: October 10, 2014, 11:30:36 AM »
Installed a set of Flat '50s earlier this week. Really enjoying them, but I am not really sure if I have them set correctly.

I used the Fender setup guide and set the pickup heights to be about 1.6mm high and low E for the neck and about 2mm for the bridge.

Neck was loud and dark, bridge was brittle and thin.

I bought the 50's because I want fat thick tones.

I lowered them to about 4mm (neck and bridge) and I think I am just about there. (I did this after ready the nickel / 2 nickel rule as used by some),

Does 4mm sound right for flat 50's? (I play with 9's)

Hi and welcome!
Follow your ears, I would say. I have mine (BG52-set) quite low. So is the Crawler in my swampashstrat.
If the tone still is too thin for your liking, check if the wiring is ok and if you need another potvalue. It can make quite a difference.
I also recommend to use heavier strings, at least 10's. Tele and strats sound much better with 10's and 11's.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
