RY vs VhII:Korina Strat Bridge to match SC's
« on: October 17, 2014, 09:43:49 PM »
I'm having some trouble picking out a bridge pup for my  (Korina Body/Neck) Strat because I've never really had a guitar handle top end as well as this one. The top really rings like a bell in a bold way. My choice has to match well with Suhr V60LP single coils (AV 6.3k). They are the brightest singles Suhr offers, and I love them to death. Unplugged the guitar is already naturally bright, so I know I never would have picked these pups by looking at paper/specs and reviews. Scary to think I would have missed out! Problem is, when switching to the bridge it's like a different guitar altogether. It has a Suhr DSH (13k AV's) in it now that has almost no top, just dark and screaming mids.

Ben at BKP recommended VHII's, but I keep going back and forth between the VHII's and Rebel Yells. The upper mid range complexity of the RY's are intense, I'm just scared of them being too hot and bright. I like the lower output of the VHII's also, just wondering if they'll come out balanced in a chunk of Korina. Kinda shooting for a Pete Thorn or Tim Pierce bridge rhythm tone where its a modern take on classic tone.

Pups need to match well with Suhr v60lp's at 6.3k (Alnico V)
Stock: DSH Bridge 13k Alnico V
Rebel Yell: 14.4k Alnico V
VHII: 8.9k Alnico V

I would go VHII here. It performs well in my ash HSS-strat, which is quite bright too. The RY is much more of a gamble in a strat, unless you tame the pickups with different pots and capacitors.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I've always had trouble picking out a bridge pup for any strat... Your reasoning seems sound because every RY clip I like is with a Paul.

Is there any chance the VHII will be like a lower output version of the DSH? It sounds fairly close at times, but I suppose the natural brightness of the guitar could even it out. oh the variables....

FWIW, Rebel Yell bridge was bright in my Les Paul and it's even bright (but phat) in my short scale lump of mahogany guitar.   Try the VHII.

I have not played the DSH but the SSH, and that was a rather dark pickup. Both the Rebel Yell and the VHII bridge pickups should be a lot brighter than the DSH. Output wise the VHII would be a better match.
