Pickups for UV777PBK
« on: October 29, 2014, 11:15:21 AM »
So I just acquired a UV777PBK and looking to replace the HSH configuration, I like the blazes but not for the stuff I play (modern hard rock/metal). I need something that has plenty punch, decent cleans and ideally a bridge pickup that is suited for leads as well. I play through a Kemper, primarily through 5153, Mesa MarkIIC+ and Soldano profiles although that will change depending on the guitar I'm using. What would you recommend? The guitar itself is quite resonant and loud acoustically, so I want this thing to scream

Basswood, right?  Is it middy?  Cold Sweat set might be the go.

It kinda depends on the flavor of rock/metal you're doing, and the tuning you'll be in. In general, for basswood, I'd think you'd find success with the Cold Sweat (as above), Miracle Man, Juggernaut, Black Hawk, Aftermath, or even Warpig, just depending on the particular sound you're going for. For screaming AND versatility, I'd say Cold Sweat, Miracle Man, or Black Hawk, but again, three very different tones right there.

Can you give more info on the sound you want?

Basswood body, 1-piece maple neck, front mounted pickups/electronics and obviously H-S-H configuration. Guitar will stay in B standard tuning and the type of hard rock is more akin to Alter Bridge, Shinedown etc. whilst metal ranges from core elements (Low B chugging... :embarrassed: ) e.g. Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine and the like. The band I play in's music goes from clean, breakup, heavy rhythm and high energy leads. The other guitarist uses an Epiphone MKH 7 string with EMG 81-7/707s so something that could compliment that well would be fantastic. I cover all the lead work and majority of cleans, so as long as my rhythm tone can compliment his i.e. not add any more mud as his is quite low-mid focused then it should balance out well.

I tend to think Cold Sweat is good.  Brighter and less bassy than a Miracle Man, it might work well with the 7-string.  I would ask BKP though.

EDIT: Actually there are quite a few Cold Sweat 7 videos on youtube, but not specifically with your guitar.
