Looking to get some advice.
« on: November 03, 2014, 08:47:45 PM »
Hi guys Ill try to keep this short and sweet. Ok so basically I am thinking of getting a new guitar soon but i want to replace the pickups with some of Bare Knuckles. I want to get a good sound of said guitar but i dont know which guitar to think about getting or which pickups would be best. I am looking to get a really nice sound for modern metal music but also want good cleans and such etc

Ive been looking at guitars by jackson, ibanez and esp. I like the shape of the jackson soloist and i want a tremolo bridge. What guitar would work well for this genre and would benefit more from replacing the pickups. Also looking at upgrading to a head and a cab for metal. Any suggestions? On a budget

Yeah, more info is always good.

Three things I can say as general stuff for you though:
1. Fender scale. Usually much better for modern metal sounds and detuning as they stay more controlled. Les Paul scale can get mushy and too darkly middy quickly.
2. Get a guitar that is preferably on the bright side. So think maple neck for example. With all the gain and saturation you might pile on a bright guitar will stay defined. Plus that works well with most modern metal PUs.
3. Try before you buy. Even if a guitar looks good in specs, feel and sound varies a lot.

BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Jackson, Schecter C1, Charvel, Ibanez RG, all good for metal. Pickupchoice depends what kind of tone you're after and what are the timbers/fretboard.
Amps: Look at the Orange Jim Root Terror, Blackstar and the Laney Ironheart. If you're only playing at home you'd could consider a modelingamp too.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Price wise is like this.

Up to 400 for the guitar

pickups price doesnt matter

up to 300 for an amp.

does anyone know some where you can get guitars without pickups from? would save me a bit of cash

If you want a guitar without pickups I think your best bet is a used one. If you're in the UK keep an eye on www.thefretboard.co.uk.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

You could try looking on eBay at guitars for "project or repair".  They might be wrecked but sometimes you see guitars which are just missing pickups or parts.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
