The 'pissed off' big brother of the RY?
« on: December 13, 2014, 05:46:34 PM »
Guys,
I turn to you for assistance. My Hard Ash 7 string 'ibanez custom' is a naturally bright guitar and the RY is both a little bright, and too polite. What is , as in the title, the big brother to the RY? With both a little more power and not as bright?
And while we're at it, what might be their Daddy be (has to be AlNiCo though)? A-bomb? mm neck (in bridge)?
Thanks

From what I've read on the forum, the Nailbomb seems to be the perfect fit.

Yep. To a certain extend the RY is an underwound nailbomb. That means the NB is hotter, fuller, and shifts some of the high mid spike of the RY down to the center and low mids. Very agressive. Where the RY is an 80s metal child the NB is 90s.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Be careful with the Nail Bomb though. It may have less upper-mids than the RY but it does have more highs at the cutting edge which are often referred to as "hair".

I know you have said it has to be alnico but to be honest I'd probably consider the Painkiller to be the "Daddy" of this particular family of pickups.

A-Bomb is what you want.

MM neck wouldn't be a good match.  RY neck will match well.

A-Bomb, because I can't think of anything else that's supposed to be a pissed-offed Rebel Yell.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

This sounds just like I post I made about a year ago.  The answer is the Alnico Nailbomb.

The RY Bridge is clearer, more consonant, and more 'open' sounding.  The A-Bomb is more 'dissonant' sounding, more raw, and it has more hair.  It's surprisingly more 'gainy' in tone, and a lot of that is probably due to the mismatched coils.  It has a phatter bottom and the top end is more treble focused whereas the RY has more bite in the harmonics and more focus in the high mids, with a really tight, clear, and punchy bottom.

It definitely does work with the RY neck and now I've gotten used to the combo, I don't really notice anything 'off' at all.  At first, I thought it was a pretty dramatic shift from the RY neck to the A-Bomb bridge, mostly because of how hairy and gnarly the A-Bomb can get.  In actuality, it's really a hair splitting difference and the A-Bomb just pushes the amp that bit further.  I really dig the pickup combination now I'm used to it and I think you'll really like it.
