Humbucker for the Bridge of a Jazzmaster HH?
« on: December 21, 2014, 01:55:02 PM »
Hello everyone,

Just wanted some opinions and suggestions on what I should put into the bridge of this Jazzmaster with humbuckers.

It is an alder body with a rosewood fingerboard.
I want something that I can get good bluesy or southern rock tones with a low gain setup, but something that can still get heavy enough for some older two-step songs.
I am running a signature 5150 and a closed-back Orange 2x12, with a Green Rhino overdrive. Looking at getting a PRS Archon 50 or Orange TH30 sometime next year.

Thought about Black Dog or Crawler, any thoughts or other suggestions?

PS, I currently have a Tele with Piledrivers in it and I absolutely love it.

Thank you for reading and taking the time to suggest ideas!

I've had a black dog in my jazzmaster bridge, and well... It fking rules! The mids come through perfectly on an alder guitar, and the highs are just enough. If there's one pickup that can definitely handle lots of styles it's the BD. Having used the same setup before personally - I say go for it!

The mediumhot Crawler performs very well in alder bolt-on guitars. You can have a nice splitted tele-esque tone too. I like the way this pickup cleans up without getting whimpy, just a tad thinner and chimier. Full bore you can expect thicks mids and rounded highs, but with still enough cut, don't worry. I appreciate that solonotes higher up board stay full. It's a versatile pickup with still that PAF-pedigree shining through, just with more thickness and compression (and therefore) a tad less openness than say a Mule.

The Black Dog has way more highs and I seldom seeing that one being chosen for a strat/tele/jazzmaster. I don't know exactly why, but seeing the contribution above it might work well.

Another option is the Abraxas, which sits sonically and outputwise between the Mule and the Crawler.

I will say this though, based on Telerocker's input -

I used the jazzmaster/bd combo when tuned to c-standard with 56-13 strings. Under this setup it sounded HUGE. While I doubt it should sound thin when used in combination with a 5150/orange cabinet you will definitely have a more dynamic vintage style pickup, which won't compress the way high output pickups will.

I've never tried them but the Abraxas are the link between the Mules and Crawlers - which are both great pups...
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Thank you so much for your replies, it really means a lot!

Thank you also BigB for the recommendation of the Abraxas, I had overlooked it and am loving the description.

It looks like I have a decision to make in the next couple of weeks. I will definitely post my result when I order a set and install it.

Thanks again!
