2015 starts with a bang
« on: January 05, 2015, 11:23:45 PM »

saw the New Year in with a show I was pretty happy with. 30mins later a drunken German falls on my axe :/

never had anything like that in 14 years of gigging.

Ouch!  What sort of surface did it hit to rip the frets out like that?

I'm quite confused by that as well. The only thing I can think of is that it was a mic stand.

Ouch, that's bloody annoying. I never seen that kind of damage on a fretboard. Looks like a rat took a bite. I hope it can be repaired.

I saw a Tele neck on eBay a few weeks ago with similar damage, but only on one fret.

The guy described it as just a ding on the edge of the neck, but you could see that the end of the fret was bent with wood missing from under it.  I wouldn't know how to repair that!

Although one of the frets has been ripped out, at least one other (I actually think two others) have been bent.

You can't really see it from the pictures but there is a depression in the top of the board in one place too.

I probably played more gigs with this guitar than any other, it was the second electric I got. Its had alot of play due to its surprisingly great sound and convenient size for aeroplanes. I'm hoping it can be repaired by a crafty luthier, I like the sound and its really comfortable for me.

Its definitely worth a go and Wez seems confident.

I actually felt quite queasy after it happened, I couldn't believe it. Spoilt my evening properly, I left soon after.

I guess the chipped wood can be fixed with some kind of hard-drying glue/epoxy impregnated with rosewood dust, or something like that?  Better on rosewood than maple, at least.

I hope it turns out OK.

Yikes!

Presumably you could cut a chunk out, and replace with a similar symmetrical piece of rosewood?

Drunk punters- don't you just love em. I have had a few close shaves in my time but I hope you can get the repairs done and your guitar is as good as new thereafter.

Wez reckons that inlaying new rosewood might not be necessary. He feels he can replace the frets, steam out the bruising and do lacquer repairs. He did what I felt was a tricky repair to a Steinberger body I had and I was really happy with the result, I'm confident he can do the business this time.. but nevertheless I am a little nervous.

God, I could see this guy stumbling around and was immediately worried. I had my eye on him, but there was nothing I could do, it only took a second for the damage to be done.

In the past the only problems I'd had with drunks was the drummer(!! - pure comedy really) and people trying to talk with me mid-show and in some cases mid-song.

I always take care of my equipment, I will do so even more now.

At the end of the day, the value and/rarity of the instrument in order to replace it is less important. It was the last night of the tour, what if it had been in the middle, I would need to borrow a guitar from somewhere. I really like the sound and feel of this guitar, even if a replacement might feel similar, it might sound not as good, or it might not be so worn in. This guitar was "cheap" new, I got it as a direct-from-factory-reject. Its had many different pickups fitted and several different wiring ideas tried. Its had two bridges fitted, one of which was repaired on my girlfriend's kitchen table with a bolt I found on the street in Berlin. And its been played in most countries in Europe. I even played it the night I met my current girlfriend.

Wez did the business alright. You can see the repair slightly, but it feels absolutely perfect. Very pleased, I feared the worst at one point.
