Bkp Juggernaut vs Blackhawks?!
« on: January 27, 2015, 06:05:45 PM »
Okay Guys, This is my first post here. I currently Have a 6 and 7 string custom being built and i'm trying to decide on pickups.
I was originally just going to get the juggernauts, but I recently discovered that one of my favorite bands, Northlane, Used Blackhawks and they have great tone as well.
What are the pros and cons to each?
I might get one in the 6 and the other in the 7?
Not sure, wanting to see opinions on both for hardcore/metalcore/djent.
I play everything from august burns red, to texas in july, to northlane, to periphery. Generally either drop c, b, or ab.

What do you guys think?

The 7 string is a solid ash body w/ a maple neck.
The 6 string is a Black limba body w/quilted maple top. Maple neck, ebony board.
If it matters :)

to be quite honest, i think you should go with the juggernauts in the 7 and the blackhawks in the 6. i feel like the woods would properly support those choices. the juggernaut is a beast and is in my opinion suited a bit better for ash. while the blackhawks i think need a bit of warmth which the limba should have. they arent WILDLY different pickups, but they are different in their own ways. they can definitely both achieve the tone you're hoping to get.

Okay; i'm definitely leaning towards the juggs in the 7. I've also been very interested in the Dimarzio Titans. Anyone have any thoughts on those?
I hope it's okay to talk about them here :)
Juggs vs Blackhawks vs Titans?
For a 6 string?

Hmmmm.  I'll bet once you try the Juggernauts you'll be pretty sold on BKP.  FWIW, if I had a 6 and a 7 string they'd both have Juggernauts in them.  I like those pickups that much.

Aside from that, I'd be tempted to put a Holy Diver bridge and VHII neck in the other guitar, only since I like variety.
Aside from that, between Black Hawks and the Titans, it's a tough call.  Mostly, I never play DiMarzios so I can't comment on them, but with the Black Hawks, Misha liked those and the aftermaths, so the Juggernauts are kind of a hybrid of the two but also sweetened and phattened.
The Black Hawks are apparently unbelievable but we're talking tonnes of clean power which is similar to actives.  It's really a question of whether you are down with that or not.  At any rate, as much as I love the Juggernauts, I believe variety is the spice of life so definitely try something different in the other axe.

I hope this makes sense, it feels very disorganized.

I'm totally with you man!
The reason the dimarzios titans are so intriguing is that a lot of people say they are basically aftermaths with a smoother high end.
So with the clear price difference, it's very tempting :)

I have emg's in my other 7 and another 6; and I dig them for sure. That's why the blackhawks were so intriguing.
Sorry if i spelling that wrong :afro:

But yeah, I guess i'm asking kinda is how to blackhawks compare to the juggs?

Has anyone tried the titans?

I know i'm gonna like the Juggernauts, But if the blackhawks are gonna be awesome too; but different, It would be nice to have variety in my guitars :)

I'll definitely get around to having a juggernaut set one day.

From what Misha said the juggernaut is meant to be a combo of the black hawk and aftermath. It's got it's own thing going on though for sure just look at the design.

The best of the alnico black hawk but less compressed and almost as tight as the aftermath.  The neck is a vhii neck but more powerful to match the output of the bridge.

Try and think of black hawks as being a step closer to active pickups.  In fact think of the black hawks as being like a different flavour of actives just without the batteries but the tradeoff is actives do have less noise than passives.....theyre also much less dynamic though.  Other brands claim to have made pickups which are passive and can do what actives do well but i've tried them and they can't.

I'm still on the hunt for a perfect set of pickups for my les paul.  I have one set from another brand in mind first but if they aren't ideal the i'm going to get the black hawks, juggs and rebel yell all at once and go through them all (Oh and a mule neck).

Rebel Yell is an amazing bridge pickup in a Les Paul.  What you put in the neck is really dependent on what your needs are and how the pickups interact with the acoustic properties of the instrument.

I think on some level, I actually like the Rebel Yell better than the A-Bomb, but the feel / tone / response of the Juggernauts is so incredible that I spend most of my practice time on my Super Strat and I pick up my other guitars when my performance needs demand those sorts of tones.

I know what you mean about the rebel yell and the a-bomb.  I think in the simplest terms they're very similar but the rebel yell is a bit more refined and the a-bomb is more aggressive never put either in a les paul though......yet.
I have some emeralds in at the moment and I have been dissapointed by them but for the first time in a while I jammed with a drummer and cranked them up and they sounded completely different.  The emeralds when cranked and in a les paul have tons or harmonics, cut and even sound pretty ballsy.  Still I want some thing in the contemp range in the bridge for sure.
