VHII for Coverband Strat
« on: February 10, 2015, 07:02:00 PM »
Hey

I'm thinking of changing the Bridge SC of my AM STD Strat (Alder body RW neck) for a Humbucker.

I really like Van Halens sound on VH 1, esp the Solo Sounds but also the beginning of RWTD or You Really Got Me for example.
VH2 also, even though it seems a little bassy at times and I'd also like it to sound well when playing some GnR or stuff from that era up to maybe some dirty modern stuff (no High Gain)
I'd like the tone to be percussive and open -  harmonics are always good as well :afro:
Rockier Bon Jovi Stuff is also a good benchmark i guess
I also like to play some Ozzy (bark at the moon, crazy train)

I got a ToneZone in my Charvel Strat so the new one doesn't necessarily need to deliver those modern higher gain stuff.

Currently I'm a little fixed on the VHII, even though it is not recommended as often as other PUs on this board

Also it'd be great if the new HB went along well with the Fat 50s in the middle and neck position of my strat

What do you guys think? is the VHII a good choice? clean sound is not that important since I still have the SCs

 Thanks!!

PS: don't get hung up on the word Coverband in the title...I like giving the tunes we play a little rockier/dirtier edge
I just want the guitar to be sorta comfortable with different styles (not vintage, not high gain)

Why not? The VHII is designed for Strat type guitars, i can't see why it wouldn't work. Some members on here have the VHII in their Strat paired with a couple of single coils. The Crawler also is designed for the same guitar if you want/need a fatter tone.

The VHII does well in this type of guitar. It's a dynamic, noncompressed and therefore touchsensitive rockpickup that you really can steer with pickattack and picktechnique. Dig in and it will scream. Those pinched harmonics jump out with no effort. I have one in an ash Fender Am. Series strat and it's a great rockpickup, certainly for the styles you mention.
