Which Capacitor?
« on: February 22, 2015, 01:20:07 PM »
Hello,

I have a Two Humbucker (Single Volume, Schaller Mega-Type "E" 5-Way Switch) guitar and was wondering "Which Capacitor 0.015 or 0.022 work better for the Tone Control?" I've looked on the BKP "Wiring Diagrams" and all of the examples show 0.022 (most likely stock example) I know of the BKP 0.015 & 0.022 but primarily for a 2=Humbucker.

Thank You for any help you could give \../

Mike

hmm  not 100% sure since their rundowns say the .015 is better for neck tone and the .022 is better for bridge. i would assume you'd go with the .022 but i'm sure someone else will chime in with a definite answer.

Hello littleredguitars2, thank you for the reply I do appreciate it!

For years I've owned single coil & humbuckers and never really looked at there "values", as far back as I can remember I've Never touched the Tone Controls? Just kept them at Full.
Only very rarely would I use it but recently I thought to try and get as much versatility as I can. My most recent guitar (past few years) has been Two Humbucker, 5-Way type "E" switch and
No tone control.

Thanks!

Hi,

0.22 is great (thats what I use)  0.15 is famous for its woman tone which is really dark, if you want clarity and articulation especially with distortion 0.22 is very well balanced.

You simply use the one you like better.

0.022uf is the standard value used for humbuckers. Gibson started using that value with the P90s and PAFs in the 50s and most manufacturers followed suit.

0.015uf is not a standard value. I believe someone measured the caps in Clapton's Les Paul and found out that the neck pickup cap drifted downwards to around 0.015uf, and because everyone looked for the woman tone, that value became a "second standard" for the neck pickup.

Hamer used 0.01uf in the 70s and 80s with their humbuckers - not a bad choice since many of them were hotter than the 50s PAFs used by Gibson.

Personally I tend to use much smaller values. I really like 0.0022uf for neck humbuckers. There are no rules really unless you want to go "specific period correct" - anything else is personal preference.

Cheers Stephan

Thank You guys for the helpful information!!! Tim also comment the same values (thank you!) for years I've never really thought about the "Tone Controls" no matter what guitar I've used from LP to Strats (and variations) they usually stay full-open, unless I play through a cr@ppy amp? I found myself to like turning down the Volume which lowers the treble a bit. This was the guitar that I was going to install the Cap. Thanks again \../
