Best Mule Pickup Combination
« on: February 27, 2015, 03:05:17 AM »
Hello,

I was interested in purchasing a set of PAF pickups for my 2004 Les Paul Studio:

http://www2.gibson.com/Images/Products/ElectricGuitars/Les-Paul/Gibson/Les-Paul-Studio/2012-Images/LPSTUEBCH1-Finish-Shot-jpg.aspx?KeepThis=true&TB_iframe=true&height=410&width=1000

...and was leaning towards a set of Mules.

However, I was also looking for something that was slightly higher gain sounding and that worked really well in a split coil, out of phase and series / parallel environment.

I began noticing that many people were using The Mules (in the neck) alongside another pickup.

Question: Which pickup in the bridge would work best with The Mules in a Les Paul Studio while also in split coil, out of phase and series / parallel?

Though I'd rather not sway peoples votes with a particular musical style that I'm looking to achieve, I will say that I am not looking for anything near Djent. Furthermore, the more versatile the pickup combination the better.

Note: If you recommends another combination (not listed in the poll), please state what combination that would be as well as why you chose that combination.

Thank you,
Nelson

The Mule-neck is superb, imo one of the best BKP's. I recommend the Abraxas because you need to go a little hotter for a good and balanced split (My Crawler splits great and combines in splitted mode very well with an Irish Tour). The Abraxas is a sort of hotrodded Mule, with a bit more mids and slightly less topend.

@Telerocker: Just to be sure, when you mentioned the following:

The Abraxas you were referring to was just in the bridge, correct (rather than an Abraxas set)?

Initially I was a little worried about mixing pickups rather than buying a calibrated Mule or Abraxas set, but after a bit of reading on the forums it seems that both The Mule (with vintage 42 AWG) and Abraxas (with slightly more modern 43 AWG) are just what I'm looking for.

Once again, thank you for all your help,
Nelson

There should not be a problem mixing BKP's. I have a Painkiller bridge and a Riff Raff neck in an Ibanez.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul

Yes, Abraxas-bridge/Mule-neck. They work well together.

Warpig bridge, Mule neck  just joking.

I would personally go for Abraxas/Mule as well. that`s my vote.

I have an Emerald/Mule set in one of my LP's and I love it.  It was the first set of pickups that I got from Tim, way back when BK were in Devon and I have always loved the combination.  I also have a Riff Raff/Stormy Monday combo in a couple of guitars, and really like that mix too.
So many pickups, so little time
