I'm on the fence on a new set for my Ibanez RGA121 Prestige
« on: March 10, 2015, 10:34:42 AM »
First and foremost: Hi guys! :D I've been lurking the forum for a while, and I bought a jugg set for my LTD AW-7...and they are the most amazing pups I have ever tried. And because of that, I'm kinda searching for my second set.

I recently picked up a 10 year old Ibanez RGA121 VLF in brand new condition. The ex-owner is mainly a bass player, and so it's been a case queen for the past decade...meaning that it still in in brand new condition...plastic on the back covers included

Now as awesome as that may sound, the V7 and V8 pickups sound like Oprah farting trough a cheap walky-talky, meaning that it really needs a pickup swap in order for this guitar to be totally awesome.

I'm aiming for a killswitch-engage / Trivium / Memphis May Fire kind-of sound, with the abilities to explore other, more clean and perhaps other genres as well. I want a sound where the bridge is nice and punchy, and the bridge is kinda sweet, almost vowel like. Good clarity, and an organic/alive feel is a big plus.

I'm currently looking at Bare Knuckle Aftermaths for tightness , Bare Knuckle (Alnico) Black Hawks for versatility and sweetness, Dimarzio Titans because they resemble A-maths without a harsh top-end, and Seymour Duncan Black Winters because I have heard good things about them.

I'm open to suggestions (Nailbombs? Lace pickups?)

So in short:
Mahogany body with thick maple top
Maple neck/rosewood fretboard
wants to sound crushing, but versatile.
HALP

OK...well immediately I would have jumped to Black Hawks. Ceramic if rhythm is a must, and alnico if you're willing to sacrifice some tightness and cut. But the alnico will provide a slightly better lead tone.

I currently have the Aftermaths which I'm selling if you're interested? For me, I wanted something a bit for juicy.

But after reading the rest of your article, the Nailbomb sounds a good choice for that vowel sound you're after.

Hope that helps :)

Well they're Black/White Zebra with Gold Bolts. And I'm selling for £150. You can always send them into BKP to get them covered which will be way cheaper than buying them new covered
