Which amps does Scott Gorham use live?
« on: March 24, 2006, 10:53:32 AM »
I went to see Thin Lizzy last night, they were amazing, and Scott Gorham (I think thats his name?) was playing a strat into some kind of Marshall, it sounded bloody perfect. Any ideas what he uses? When I have the money I DEFINATELY want whatever he had last night!

This gig also convinced my multi fx loving mate that valve amps are the future   His exact words were "$%&# the ME50, I'm saving for a Marshall valve head"

 :D

Cheers

Meself and one of the guy's from work went to the first night of the tour! and the second night, and monday night too! and last night!

Scott was deffo using Marshall, a number of em infact, they looked like old 70's JMP heads, and we noticed he had a bass head too for some unfathomable reason!

All the gig's rocked, but last night especially as they played Thunder and Lightning!

We'll ask Scott on monday's Llandudno gig an see whay he's using!

PS, Johns the king of pinched harmonics and is truly a rock god!

I feel ashamed for not knowing this but is John the guy who was singing as well? Is that John Sykes? I dont know much about the band other than their music kicks arse and they're awesome players :P I didnt like his tone as much as Scotts, seemed a bit too high gain and bassy in comparison. I noticed about 3 heads but only one had the light on so I guess he was just using that..?

We actually almost didnt make it in. My mates dad lost the tickets on the way there (we also walked around the town for at least an hour before we found the place), but luckily my mates brother knows the manager of the Carling Academy somehow, so he rang up and got us in anyway  :D Missed the support band though, any good?

Yeah it's the Whitesnake/Lizzy legend that is John Sykes!

it's well worth checking out his solo stuff, Blue Murder is an all time classic piece of 80's rock!

We'll do our best to let you know what scott uses, but he does use EMG's as well in his strats!

Heard the Tokyo dragons for the first time the other week, the amps in the video where marshall (though that dosn't mean much).

EDIT

Just checked their website, the live pics are mostly Orange amps, though some of the pics in Rockfield studios show Marshall heads.

I forgot to point out, on the way home I couldnt help but think "Do I or do I not want to replace my Mules with Emeralds now?!"    :?

Hmmm,
Tom, SURE you already know this but John Sykes is Mr.Cold Sweat.
AKA, the BKP's, although Emeralds would be more "classic" Lizzy.

In later Lizzy years (post REAL Lizzy, i.e. after Phil passed) Scott was using Marshall SL-X amps, no pedals, just amp dist.

He has used various Marshall SL's too.

Yeah I knew John Sykes was Mr Cold Sweat, but the emeralds would be more of the vintagey tone I'm guessing, which I'd prefer anyway. Is SL-X some kind of Superlead variation? This looks like it could well be...doesnt have a pregain or master knob though meaning crankage is requred  :

Yes indeed.
Actually, in the earlier Lizzy days, I believe, Scott used a Marshall 1959 Plexi lead.

Do not know of any mods at moment though. Although Scott is known to like his rig pretty simple so may not be any.

the SL-X was a JCM900 that came around in the mid-90s, they added a fourth preamp valve to boost the gain up.  I'm fairly sure that it has an all valve signal path (unlike the earlier JCM900s)

Ooh right so is the tone a bit thicker/fuller than a regular 900 then? I've heard that 900s are a bit cr@p, but Scotts tone definately wasnt cr@p
