Replacing tubes on my Mesa Boogie DC-5 amp ?
« on: April 19, 2015, 09:45:23 AM »
Hi guys !
So, my amp is out  I brought it to a gig where I lent it to a friend of mine, and at the end of their set, it emitted loud cracks and suddenly a lot of smoke got out of it.
However, when I played through, it was still working. Phewwwwwww !
But it still lets out loud cracks whenever I play, clean or distortion channel alike.

So I think the tubes are worn out. At least the preamp ones - but since it's been 4 years since I didn't change them, I might as well change them all.

So, what would you guys advise me to get ? My DC-5 currently has those Mesa Boogie valves, and I loved the sound. But at the same time, I love experimenting...

FYI, I play prog metal, so I like warm, deep and jazzy clean tones and loud roaring and tight distortion. And mid-heavy sounds. Think Dream Theater, Periphery, Red Seas Fire, etc...

Love guys !

If you are in North America Eurotubes makes your life a LOT easier, while providing very reasonably priced high grade tubes. I've used these guys for my little Peavey amp as well as a DC-3 combo. Every time it's a quick retube from the tech since everything is prepared and labeled properly. Not sure if they ship elsewhere. They provide JJ tubes in matched sets as well as singles. In my experience, if you like Mesa valves then JJ ones should make you smile. I think you can also get only preamp sets instead of entire amp sets. Fully retubing Mesas always makes me cringe a bit on the wallet. So many tubes!!

They have a few different matched sets for each amp, I typically go for the high gain set. Tight, roaring, focused. Have a good read see if it suits you!

Owned the DC3 and DC10 heads.  Massively underrated amps!  Fender/Vox cleans meet MKIV/Recto lead channel.  I never liked JJs in these as they really muted the lovely high end.
