Depends upon your persona I guess.

I am not an antagonist really. I get high blood pressure easily but it's "steam" lol.

I would prefer to end and not start a fight.

I studied Tae Kwon Do for "sport" purposes as I could fight full contact sparring in comps.

I prefer the Chinese arts for fluid attack and outright "overcoming" an opponent. But, imo Aikido (or any derivative) is great for defense purposes (with the "teaching you a lesson for picking on the wrong guy" effect).

The simplicity and finess of pressure points, locks, counter strength involved in Aikido is what I love.

I am NO lover of Mr S. Seagal as an actor, but he actually does a pretty good job with Aikido in his flicks.

Fair enough.  I can go along with that.  :)

I did Tae Kwon Do as a kid, because back then I didn't know anything else and thought self defense = karate = TKD.  It did keep me damn fit though.  We had four-hour long gradings!

On a slightly tangental topic, I got to be in the same room as Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi) at a Goshin Ryu grading in the 80s.  He was visiting for some reason.  I can't remember why.

i think one of my mates does Jiu Jitsu.... you get to use loadsa crazy weapons in that one dont you?

Jiu Jitsu is like wrestling.  Locks and holds, take-downs--that kinda thing.  The Brazilian style is thought to be the most effective, but I can't say I know very much about it at all--and it's been so long since I even thought about this stuff.  Nowdays all I do is post on this forum.

I did Tae Kwon Do for a few years, along with a lot of full contact in my younger years, it was great fun being 5'7" and 9 stone, and beating much larger (and higher graded) opponants.

Unfortunitely asthma (and club politics) killed off that style.

Akido is such a different mindset and watching our instructor (who was 73 at the time) throwing Tae Twon Do 3rd Dan instructors around with such ease was amazing. Unfortunitely asthma killed that off too :(

Sorry to hear that Rob.
Ever look into Tai Chi?
Yeah I know the stereotype that it has, but you ever see a Master? LOL
The analagy of an old guy effortlessly throwing off a whole bunch of young turks :). Saw a Master once and he was soooooooo graceful yet oozed inner power.
Funny how Tai Ci is looked upon as a kind of joga or somthing by many. In it's later form it is awesome!

I have considered it but I would prefer to have a real tutor and not some bearded hippie. My wife attended a group for a while but the tutor claimed that there was no martial art involved so I decided that he was a fraud.

I remember seeing video of a master in action way back in the early 80s and it was the business (Akido on steroids), though it looked (for want of a better term) very mellow but also focused, controlled (theres a set of condictory terms) and very powerful.

I suppose while I'm spending so much time in London I should look into finding a good tutor.

The thing I enjoyed most about Tae Kwon Do where the (as the japanese styles call them) katas, once you get into the flow it's a wonderful form of meditation. I suppose thats how Vai feels when he is practising his scales.

Damn I wish I wasnt so lazy.

Exactly and the little Tai Chi I have done is very meditative also. Really allows for focus. Like getting lost but fully aware, y'know.
Anyway, my thought is that a GOOD teacher is the biggest obstacle always.
I think (with your past experience and obvious love) you should give it a shot!
Good Luck Rob.

Good description :)

Now that I have fought off depression (& the medication) it's time to lose the padding and find a (good) Tai Chi tutor (jeez me having entheusiam this is bad)

Thanks,
Rob...

SH*T,
sorry Rob, forgot the ever present spirit of the Sameister is here and misses nought!
My deepest apologies for the manic rantings of young Sambo that will ultimately ensue.
Please forgive my momentary lapse of concentration
