5150 COMBO- not head/cab
« on: March 25, 2006, 06:29:21 PM »
ok so my quest for the middle-priced combo of my dreams goes on....

im gonna have around £500 to spend...

ENGL thunder 50  is top of the list at the mo, joined by the AC30....

HTH just recently informed me you can get 5150 combos for under £500.... been looking at em on ebay... and its obvious they dont go for much more than that.....

but why is this? is there such a huge difference between head/cab and combo? i know that of course in reality, yes, theres gonna be a big difference between and half stack and combo because cabs project the sound wayyyyyyyyy better.... but im getting a combo... and thats that...

so how do the 5150 combos fare? has anyone ever tried one? what styles do they suit best?

any info much appreciated.

thanks,

sam.

I've never owned a 5150, but I've had two other Peavey amps and played through a few more and they all sucked.  I can't stand Peavey amps.

whats this clown talkin' 'bout? 5150 sambo!? you wouldn't like it - i know ur style and it is a style that requires tone; a feature that (unfortunately) the 5150 does not support

Who knows!  You've listed three amps that really sound nothing alike and you want us to suggest another one?

At least give us some idea of the sound(s) you're trying to achieve.

well apparently... indy 'knows my style' anyway....

anything rock-hard rock- to a bordering on metal but not really metal...

nothing softer than classic rock....

thats about as specific as i need.... im not looking for a very specific sound at all

They don't really do cleans that well at all. From your clip I take it your into that stuff so an AC30 would be a good choice.
5150's are metal amps really. WFD has one! See if there are any old JCM800 combos around, there nice for across the range of tones.

mmm yer i thought they might be a bit heavy... but wasnt sure exactly what they were capable of...

but if WFD has one lol... then its not for me

ac30's are really REALLY nice.... its like the only valve amp ive played apart from my laney though lol...

but they just havent got enough gain for me really.... although just the quality of the cleans is appealing...

thats another thing to add to the requirements list-

decent cleans...

ok so its:

-good cleans
-enough gain for classic rock--->hard rock
-combo
-fairly versatile so its not just a complete one trick pony (this is because my band does some odd songs which dont really fit our style)

The other thing with 5150's is there big and weigh a ton! Do marshall do a DSL combo? I think they do, that would be a good amp. If you want to invest in a tone machine that will give you goose bumps then add some more money to your pot and check out any of the Koch range, as an owner of one, believe me they will blow you away sound wise. Cheaper than a Mesa!

They do! I dunno if its any good or not though, as I've not played it, but from what I've read they arent that good compared to the older Marshalls. Koch are so expensive.

Not tried it but Bird a dude who comes in here from time to time in Canada tried one out and said it was great.
