i'm curious. crawler content.

so i loved the crawler in a swamp ash strat. i've since sold the guitar but i still think it may be my favorite pickup. that being said i really prefer mahogany these days and i hear the crawler wouldnt really be the best fit. what sort of pickup would you guys recommend to have a similar character to the fullness and hotvintage power of the crawler that i can use in a mahogany guitar. not really sure what sort of guitar specs it would be but we'll see! thanks

Depends on the natural voice of the guitar. Crawler performs well in PRS-guitars. Abraxas will do too, just a crossover from the Mule and the Crawler. And yeah, good to hear from you!

I think it all depends on the guitar. My PRS Custom 24 is mahogany and the Crawler was incredible in that guitar but I'm not so sure it would sit as well in my Gibson.

I've got a mahogany Warmoth body en route (with afra neck - like maple).  I've got a Crawler (B) sitting on my bench waiting for it.  I've heard the same caveats about this P/U in a warmer guitar. 

I expect the body to be light weight and warm sounding, so if we take this at face value that would lead many to believe this pickup will be too round or fat in this application.  I intentionally chose a brighter neck wood and truss rod config to brighten up the overall tone in case the aforementioned scenario turns into reality.  If all else fails, I have an extra Abraxas to swap in, which I know will sound amazing in anything.  It's been outstanding in alder and mahogany bolt-ons.

Warm is not exactly warm all the time though. There is warm, and then there is the unique growling warmth the Crawler brings. The lightweight point makes me thing that while it can be warm the focus will not exactly be on the low mid end, which is where problems are most common to arise. It actually suggests that that the lower end of the spectrum might work really well with the Crawler, as it cuts the potential for going too deep. Meanwhile the Crawler also has an underestimated high end. It might not be the focus point of the voicing, but similar to the MM having mids, but them just not being up front, the Crawler has high end to cut through and not feel dull.
In the axe I have it in it even changes between right and too bright depending on my daily ear.

Yeah, looks Kiichi and I are Crawler-fans. Well, in the right guitar of course. Slays in strat, works in a lot of mahogany based guitars too. I would just be careful with most Gibsons.
But more on topic: Kiichi is right, as I stated several times, the topend is really there, don't worry, just in the total tonespectrum the huge mids are what your ears notice first.

Just reacquainted myself with my Crawler equipped ESP Eclipse (solid mahogany body with maple cap, mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard) last night - I have been playing my A-bomb and RY equipped guitars a lot instead recently and was pleased to renew my relationship with the Crawlers. It's not the most versatile combination and I probably wouldn't recommend it as your only guitar - I would never use it for metal, for example, but through a JC it handles New Wave perfectly (we played through a couple of Cure songs). As has been said previously, in a mahogany guitar they may lack the bite to do aggressive metal styles but they still have definition and clarity by the bucket load, and the split coil sounds are by far the best and most usable that I've had in a humbucker.

i'm doing a custom build through this guitar maker (definitely check his work out . its awesome) and its an ash body which i know the crawler will do great in. maple  neck. bolt on with a pau ferro fingerboard

now i was basically dead set on going with the mississippi queen in the neck to match the crawler but now i'm wondering if i may prefer the supermassive humbucker sized. would it be a better match?



edit: decided to go with the stockholm set!
